Music Review: Meghan Trainor "Dear Future Husband"

Meghan Trainor
Dear Future Husband
Album: Title EP
Year: 2015

Meghan Trainor wants to be treated like a princess from the man in her life in the         selfish “Dear Future Husband.”

A fuzzy piano opens thes single,  setting an old-fashioned tone.  Part of the chorus starst the song. In it, she says she has some requirements a boyfriend has to meet before he’ll become her fiance. (“Dear future husband/Here's a few things you'll need to know if/You want to be my one and only/All my life.”)

She wants to be taken out: dinner, movie, concert, whatever she wants. When their anniversary rolls around, she expects a bouquet of roses. She adds if he follows her rules, she’ll be attentive to him. Like him, though, she has a job, too and is every bit the modern woman. Cooking isn’t an interest for her and she’d rather eat out anyway. (“Take me on a date, I deserve it, babe/And don't forget the flowers every anniversary/Cause if you'll treat me right, I'll be the perfect wife/Buying groceries, buying what you need/You got the 9 to 5, okay but so do I/So don't be thinkin' I'll be home and baking apple pies/I never learned to cook, but I can write a hook/Sing along with me, sing sing along with me.”)

In the pre-chorus, she says that he can’t be dismissive of her and calm her down when she’s upset. (“You gotta know how to treat me like a lady/Even when I’m actin’ crazy/Tell me everything’s alright.”)

In the full chorus, she adds he has give her compliments all the time. (“Dear future husband/Here's a few things you'll need to know if/You want to be my one and only/All my life/Dear future husband/If you wanna get that special loving/Tell me I'm beautiful each and every night.”)

She tells him that she’s always right and for him to just say sorry. Otherwise, he’s sleeping on the couch until he does. (“After every fight, just apologize/And maybe then I'll let you try and rock my body right/Even if I was wrong, you know I'm never wrong/Why disagree, why why disagree.”)

             The pre-chorus is sung again.

In the second chorus, she adds that he has to make sacrifices for her. He can have a guy’s night any time. Also, they’ll have equal time with both of their families. (“Dear future husband/Here's a few things you'll need to know if/You want to be my one and only/All my life/Dear future husband/Make time for me, don't leave me lonely/And no we'll never see your family more than mine.”)
In the bridge, she says she gets first dibs on the her side of the bed. He also has to be gentleman who has to give her jewelry to prove his love. (“I'll be sleeping on the left side of the bed/Open doors for me and you might get some... kisses/Don't have a dirty mind, just be a classy guy/Buy me a ring, buy buy me a ring babe.”)

                  The pre-chorus is sung again.

An extended chorus ends the single. (“Dear future husband/Here's a few things you'll need to know if/You want to be my one and only/All my life/Dear future husband/If you want to get that special lovin'/Tell me I'm beautiful each and every night/Future husband, better love me right.”)

Trainor needs to exercise her vocal chops more often. She has shown some hints of it. She has to leave the rapping behind and branch out if she wants to be more than about the bass. Her list is inexperienced twentysomething with relationships and self-centered, which is turn off.

The sprouting  “Dear Future Husband” finds some improvement but she has to move the focus from herself.
