Music Review: Blake Shelton & Gwen Sebastian "My Eyes"

Blake Shelton & Gwen Sebastian
My Eyes
Album: Based On A True Story…
Year: 2014

Blake Shelton finds his girlfriend absolutely stunning in the loving   “My Eyes.”

A lingering guitar opens the single, setting a calming tone.  He compliments her on her outfit. She gives him a shy smile in return, telling him “thanks.” She sai she felt like wearing something casual today. He says it doesn’t matter. It looks better than any expensive couture gown. He wants to kiss her and hold his arms so badly. It’s become uncontrollable. (“Those high heels with that sun dress/Turquoise heart hanging 'round your neck/Red lips like wine, want to drink them up/And keep on drinking' 'til you make me drunk/Tied up here, want to let it down/And just let the rest fall to the ground/You take beautiful to the max/Can't help myself when you look like that.”)

In the chorus, he takes his finger and indicates for her to come over to him. Once she does, he puts his arms around her shoulders and pulls her straps down on her dress. (“Come a little closer, come a little closer/Come a little closer, girl the way you look tonight/My eyes are the only thing I don't want to take off of you/Come a little closer, come a little closer/Come a little closer, girl the way you look tonight/My eyes are the only thing I don't want to take off of you.”)

In their sun room, he turns his head to the sky and asks her if she sees the moon. It may be the exact shape and has the right proportions to be beautiful. However, it’s her who has her attention. (“There's a million stars dancing in the sky/A picture perfect moon so bright/But I don't care, I'm looking at you/From where I stand you can beat the view.”)

                  The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, he’s mentioned to he’s traveled to France and seen Notre Dame, he’s visited the Modern Musuem of Art and viewed some amazing art. However, it’s her who appeals to his every sense. (“My eyes have seen/Some amazing things/But girl, my eyes aren’t seen/Nothing quite like you, hey baby.”)

An extended chorus is sung to end the single. (“Come a little closer, come a little closer/Come a little closer, girl the way you look tonight/My eyes are the only thing I don't want to take off of you/Come a little closer, come a little closer/Come a little closer, girl the way you look tonight/My eyes are the only thing I don't want to take off of you/Come a little closer, come a little closer/Come a little closer, girl the way you look tonight/My eyes are the only thing I don't want to take off of you.”)

Shelton may have the stereotypical country girl in his songs (she wears high heels, hang out at the river, drink beer). To his credit, he respects and honors them. They aren’t as a means to get laid. They are made to be loved. There is something more to them.

Sebastian, unfortunately, is a non-entity. Her vocals are a murmur and she is mainly left to the background. It’s only towards the end she announces her presence. There isn’t any chance to get to know her at all.

The idyllic “My Eyes” has a sweetness to it not found in many newer country songs.
