Music Review: Asher Roth "I Love College"

Asher Roth

I Love College

Album: Asleep In the Bread Aisle

Year: 2009

Asher Roth attends more parties than classes in the sluggish  “I Love College.”

In the intro, the MC Lyte’s “10% Dis” sample begins and then leads to Weezer’s “Say It Isn’t So,” setting a hodgepodge tone. . He shouts at the partygoers to have fun. (“"Cause I ain't going out like a sucka, no way"/I'm nice right now/I feel good/If you have a drink/Would you please put it in the air.”)

In the chorus, he and his roommate discuss the party their floor had last night. There were so many awesome moments he wants to see again. However, he couldn’t phone at all. He danced until he was exhausted and got laid. It was great seeing all his friends, though. He asks his roommate if he wants to go out and get some breakfast. His roommate, sprawled out on his bed, says he’s still hungover. Roth tells him to get his rest. There’s another party tonight. (“That party last night/Was awfully crazy, I wish we taped it/I danced my ass off/And had this one girl completely naked/Drink my beer and smoke my weed/But my good friends is all I need/Pass out at three, wake up at ten/Go out to eat, then do it again/Man, I love college.”)

Roth says he doesn’t ever want to graduate. Right now, his biggest responsibilites are figuring out which party to go to and remember the specials at the local bars. He hasn’t aced many tests lately but people fear him at beer pong. Not even the greatest basketball players could test him. (“I wanna go to college for the rest of my life/Sip Bankers Club, and drink Miller Lite/On Thirsty Thursday and Tuesday Night Ice/And I can get pizza a dollar a slice/So fill up my cup, let's get fucked up (Let's get fucked up!)/I'm next on the table, who want what/I am champion, at beer pong/Allen Iverson, Hakeem Olajuwon/Don't even bounce, not in my house/Better hope you make it, otherwise you naked/Time isn't wasted, when you're getting wasted/Woke up today, and all I could say is, um.”)

An extended chorus is sung. (“That party last night…Man I love college (Hey!)/And I love drinking (Hey!)/I love women (Hey!)/Man I love college (Hey!”)

He goes to classes whenever. He has some wild stories, though. But he doesn’t want to get himself in any major trouble, though. He leaves the girls who are passed out are far too intoxicated alone. (“I can't tell you what I learned from school/But, I could tell you a story or two/Um yea, of course I learned some rules/Like don't pass out with your shoes on/And don't leave the house, 'til the booze gone/And don't have sex, if she's too gone/When it comes to condoms put two on/Then tomorrow night, find a new jawn/Hold the beer bong, nothing wrong with some fun/Even if we did get a little bit too drunk/Time isn't wasted, when you're getting wasted/Woke up today, and all I could say is.”)
The extended chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, he encourages the crowd to drink their beers as fast as they can. He sees some freshmen and tells them now is the time to enjoy their lives. (“Now if everybody would please/Put their drink, as high as they can/As high as they can, and repeat after me/Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug!/Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug!/Freshmen! Freshmen!/Freshmen! Freshmen!/Do something crazy! Do something crazy!/Do something crazy! Do something crazy!/Keg-stand! Keg-stand!/Keg-stand! Keg-stand! (That party last night)/Man I love collge, I love it (That party last night)/Goodnight everybody/I gotta head back to class for a little bit.”)

The first chorus is sung again.

In the final section, he hand some flyers out to classmates to his party at his dorm. He says anyone can come. (“But after that/You know what's goin' down/My house and 3 kegs/See you there, you're all invited/Bring your friends, bring your mom/Do I really have to graduate.”)

Roth slurs through his words, barely awake. He’s simply talking. There isn’t any rhythm at all. He’s a notorious frat boy who wants to sail through the life without a care. The only plus side is he’s not a misogynist. There’s a line somewhere.

The sampling is puzzling. MC Lyte is used briefly in the intro. While Weezer’s “Say It Isn’t So” is used throughout. The Weezer sample is out of place. It’s main purpose, though, is match Roth’s snail-like pace. There is no way he would’ve been kept up with MC Lyte sample.

The problematic “I Love College” is a waste of space.
