Music Review: Jessie J "Masterpiece"
Jessie J
Masterpiece
Album: Sweet Talker
Year: 2015
Jessie J ignores unrealistic expectations in the direct “Masterpiece.”
Vehement strings open the single, setting a confrontional tone. A reviewer said her songs do not have the same punch they once had. Some fans want a “do-over” album. She’s proud of her work and if it’s to other people’s liking, they have the option of turning the song off. They don’t understand that work behind the scenes. Sometimes, it involves picking her battles with record executives. It’s not easy putting out an album. However, she can handle it. She has a tough skin and if she really wants to be a superstar, it’s needed. (“So much pressure, why so loud?/If you don't like my sound you can turn it down/I got a road, and I walk it alone/Uphill battle, I look good when I climb/I'm ferocious, precocious I get braggadocios/I'm not gonna stop, I like the view from the top.”)
In the pre-chorus, she chooses to ignore what other people say. She’s going to mistakes. It’s going to happen. Not every show or song is going to be perfect. (“You talk that blah blah/That la la, that rah rah shit/And I'm so done, I'm so over it/Sometimes I mess up, I eff up, I hit and miss/But I'm okay, I'm cool with it.”)
In the chorus, there are some songs she wishes maybe she hadn’t recorded. However, she likes to try new things. She knows she has that one great album in her. She’s only at the beginning of her career. She has plenty of time to figure it out. (“I still fall on my face sometimes/And I, can't colour inside the lines/Cause, I'm perfectly incomplete/I'm still working on my masterpiece/And I, I wanna hang with the greatest/Got a way to go, but it's worth the wait/No, you haven't seen the best of me/I'm still working on my masterpiece.”)
Her friends, family and co-workers encourage her to do better and keep her spirits up. The people who criticize her every move and note don’t get a vote. She needs support, not insults. (“Those who mind don't matter/Those who matter don't mind/If you don't catch what I'm throwing/Then I leave you behind/Gone in a flash/And I am living like that, yeah.”)
The pre-chorus is sung again.
The chorus is sung three times to end the single.
Jessie J stands up for herself, in terms of her career, and address with every point with class and dignity. She’s human, most importantly and not above screwing up every once in awhile. She has the talent to back up to some bragging if she wanted. However, she chooses not to which makes her extra awesome.
The upfront “Masterpiece” won’t take anyone’s crap – and it shouldn’t.
