Need a free play tutorial

I was taking some time trying to figure out what tutorial was best and all, but then I realized that it might be the first one. The other tutorials have you face off against AI opponents on an easy mode, but the first one allows you to play without opposition. It will allow you to free play without you worrying about being bought out by your opposition. You could try to figure the game out, try a different mix of buildings, figure out what doesn't work, etc. I haven't seen any other mode where you could do that.

Unfortunately, it doesn't let you play with everything that the game has to offer such as play with colonies of other types, play with off world markets, etc.

What I'm suggesting is that you add another tutorial level where you can play alone, but it has no win conditions. Make everything available. Make it possible to play and learn without any risk of losing.

If you feel up to it, you could also add additional tutorials where you as supposed to achieve something much like how tutorial 1 is about getting a level 5 colony. Maybe make 10 off world shipments, get 1000 food, get 100,000 moneyz without any debt (or very little), produce 10 units of steel for 5 to 10 minutes, get a level 5 colony without getting more than 20,000 debt at any one moment, etc. Make the goals so that you practice skills that you need to play. Or maybe those would best be called challenges.

Hey DivineWrath,

We're currently working on the next pass on the tutorials so your feedback is fantastic in helping us determine how to shape it. I really like the ideas of being able to practice to certain levels.

We have a lot on our plate and I don't know when they'll be ready but I'd love to hear your feedback when we get the next version in.

Thanks!

Sure. I'm patient. I'll let you know what I think when I see the changes.

I'm still working on the ideas. I only came to this realization today.

I have asked this question elsewhere, but I guess it does't hurt to ask again here, since I didn't get an answer there...  ;)

The question was whether you can see how big the colony has grown? I would very much like to see one of these challenges be to get the colony (as opposed to the company, I mean the consumer settlement) as big as possible.

Hmm... Well, I haven't seen anything on the surface layer change. I'm talking visuals here. What does happen is the maintenance costs for the HQ will increase (like demanding more food and oxygen), and you get more claims to build stuff with. In some cases, the HQ upgrades will unlock new structures that you can build, like patent labs or off world markets.

Does that answer your question(s)?

Thanks for the answer, but I am talking about the settlement, the consumers, the drivers of the market, not the HQ. If there are enough resources being produced (for low enough prices I presume) the settlement grows. Letting the settlement grow seems like a fun sub-target next to making the best profit.  Like a type of virtual CSR (corporate social responsibility) ;-).

Oh that settlement. Yes, it does appear to grow. So long as you keep the prices low for water, food, and oxygen, it will grow. If it gets too high, the growth will stop, and if it is too much higher, the population will shrink. The settlement will take up more tiles over time as it grows. I have had times where I had built too close to the settlement and found where I planned to build had a few buildings placed in my way (I couldn't claim those tiles). In addition, when the population grows, so do the perks of the pleasure dome. I think the calculation is x + 2 * population (I don't know what x is at the moment). Finally, I think resource consumption increases so the rate that some goods like electronics will raise in price.

Keep in mind that you can see some of the details for the campaign (which in ends in a lost map if it drops to zero), but not other game types (it used to be different and it might change later).

Some of my answers are more speculation at this time, as I don't know how to test some of them. Maybe I could I play with tutorial 1 to see if the consumption rate is a factor and if it actually increases as the population does.

Thank you, yes, that is what I meant. So at the moment there is no way to tell in a normal game, but for the size of it. Which could be enough. I am very much looking forward to playing soon and finding out!

Agreed on just more tutorials or more explanation in general as you go. Played for a bit last night and managed to do OK, but it was really a large guessing game. Having some explanation of what affects prices, a guide for early expansion, etc, just a better explanation of the basics would be welcome
