ShadowFX does not seem to work after installation

Restart needed after install?

Hi, I just installed ShadowFX on my Windopws 8.1 machine. But after setting the shadow to any of the possible colors, nothing is shown.  Do I need a restart of Windows? That should be strange, because other products like Start8 and Fences doesn't.

Thanx in advance,

Jaap

You shouldn't do, but it can't hurt to try.

Make sure the Stardock ShadowFX service is running too.

The ShadowFX service is running, but still nothing is shown. I switched to the setting Neon Blue, that should be very visible. But nope.

Could it be TeamViewer? I am logged in to the Win 8.1 pc from another location. TeamViewer including desktop background or without makes no difference.

It is always possible it might be.  That's not something we would have tested.

I'm having the same problem, I only get the shadow effect on the shadowfx configuration window.

I don't have teamviewer

Actually looking further its certain windows that don't work.

  • Outlook 2013 seems to have it's own grey drop shadow.
  • Skype works.
  • IconDeveloper doesn't display it until you close the welcome screen overlay.  I'm guessing its because it doesn't fully have the focus
  • explorer works
  • chrome works
  • putty works.
  • VS2013, no shadow on loading splash or the main window

Some applications intentionally disable the OS shadow.  These did not get a shadow on Windows 7 and will not get one with ShadowFX on Windows 8.  This is normal and an application developer choice and is not something that can (or even should) be changed.

If an app uses the standard OS frames it will generally have a shadow.  Most shadow designs have a smaller shadow for inactive windows vs active windows, so if a window is not active then it would have a less visible shadow.

Are you using the standard OS theme and are you using any remote control software?

For me it was TeamViewer that did not show the shadows. Om the pc itself it works on most of the Windows. Outlook2013, Word 2013, Visual Studio 2013, all no shadow. And that are the mostly used applications on my machine, so what is the pro for ShadowFX? The poor grey shadow of Office 2013 does not charm me. But Microsoft is now using a kind of flatlook for those applications, which behaves different then normal Windows forms.

Also,  ditto.  Nothing.  No Shadow FX at all for any window.
