The Rating System

The Rating System

Now, don't get me wrong, I am for the rating system; however, I think that once a person who has the privilege of being able to rate a skin has made a choice, they should not be able to go back and change it.

The rating system is being abused by malicious minded people who either have a grudge, or just get a twisted
pleasure out of having the power to negatively influence other people's hard work.

Migellito, I think the people that visit here often see sometimes biased ratings on skins. Whether these are walls or WB or whatever. I think that most people who submit skins here know very well what they are doing. And also know very well how much work is put into it. I have nothing against Jafo, but his last 2 walls submitted here would have been moderated on instant if I had uploaded them. In his comments he even agrees and what are they doing in the walls section then anyway? On one hand you want the "best of the best", on the other hand things creep in "at least not very good at all". I have nothing against MikeB, but his cursor is not as good as a whole lot of Jalentorn ones that didn't even got to a 10. Also his colony WB wasn't a 10 in my eyes compared to the BorgX skin. It wasn't very original either. Speaking of buddies to pad. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against their work or against them personally, I am merely stating some facts and I don't think I am the only one that sees it like this. If you want to be leading, try to be objective and lead. And sometimes listen to constructive criticism rather than hold on to conservative defense. I don't mind ratings, we have spoken about it before, and I have said then that if you downgrade a skin you need to give constructive criticism. Only downgrading a skin makes someone only wonder why. (Yeah, I know, you are all too busy to give constructive criticism) Look at motions thread, he still wonders why.

But I do have something against ratings if it comes into play as an excluding factor.

I think anyone that spends more than a glance pondering their 'ratings' is wasting their time.

10='I love it'
1='this sucks'

If people can't string a few meaningful thoughts together about something, then the number they rate it at is meaningless. I kind of notice the first rating I get, because I know where that comes from. Ratings beyond that, I couldn't care less, since I also *know* where they come from. I'm really not gonna lose sleep if someone doesn't like something I made because it doesn't match their Hello Kitty wallpaper.

Downloads are meaningless as well. People can't judge a piece until they have used it. I would rather have ten downloads that stayed on the desktop for a month than a million that went straight to the recycle bin. Sure, I want people to use what I offer, but I would be silly to think that a tenth of the people who download what I make ever actually do.

Anyone who thinks about their work, spends time on it, and is proud enough to upload it really isn't gonna be helped or harmed by an anonymous number. If you upload stuff in order to find out if something is good you are doing everyone a disservice. End-users who need numbers to decide if a piece is good enough to download have no meaningful opinion, so how much worse is it when the artists themselves need to see that number to decide if their own work is of quality? You made it, did you do a quality job?

To sum up, if you are plagued by doubt because of your ratings, then it probably *isn't* because of your ratings.

Well, I like to see high numbers, call it personal vanity and I'd admit that willingly. High ratings and download numbers indicate to me that the people I made the skin for like it that much. Since I want people to like my work this indicates to me that they do in fact appreciate my hard work. If my reasoning seems faulty or illogical to you, that is your opinion and you are certainly entitled to it. Your opinion has no bearing on anything that I do now, or in the future.

btw bakerstreet, Jafo assures me that you are in all actuality a very nice man. I respect his opinions...

You mean my opinion has no bearing unless it is a anonymous, numeric opinion, right? lol...

reread my post. High download numbers mean nothing, only that people have downloaded it. And you as much as anyone should know how much number ratings mean. Come on, your conversation is up there for everyone to see. I would rather have a single appreciative email from a user than a 10 rating any day.

I would give your reasoning [Rating: 4] I'll stick to replying to you with numbers since you like those better

well, i rate two things, walls and sysmetrix skins, because i use them, and I rate nothing else (far as i recall).

there have been NUMEROUS times i have wanted to break adni's perfect ratings just because MY PERSONAL opinion is that his work is repetetive (in a broad sense...a lot of the exact same themes with different shades, in my opinion). however, i have NEVER actually been willing to give him a "1" just to drop the "10" constant that he usually ends up with.

the same with the comments. you get the regulars who post as the first two or three for the same artist giving the same feedback no matter what the work was. odd, no?

anyways, sucky or not, tough. you get no options.

you don't like it, the only real way to change it is become somebody with influence around here. the people cpomplaining don't seem to have that position, and the ones who do have the abilities do not seem to complain. you want to become one, stop complaining first. get your foot in the door, and THEN make some changes.

otherwise, just move along like the rest. it ain't exactly affecting your social life. when was the last time you got a date from a frigging rating or comment on your graphics, outside of professional work, really?
for the record, i simply don't rate adni's work. i figure if you ain't got anything good to say, then keep your mouth shut.

my obvious exception is when i think people are attacking others i respect on these boards...
and another thing, adni, i feel you simply have skill way beyond what you create. i think NOTHING you have made sucks in any way. i'm just waiting for you to break out.

i feel the same about styl_skinner, or whatever his name is (sorry, forgot the exact way he spells it).

the skill is there, get away from the repetetive stuff. you are better than that, we all see it and know it. try something new, different, something you are afraid your skill might not match yet.
Your reasoning is certainly sound and you have been around here much longer than I, so I'll bow to the
more enlightened opinion. As I said before, call it vanity on my part. To me, this is all new and exciting
right now but I'm sure it tends to wear off after awhile.

Oh, Lecrayon, Lecrayon, Lecrayon.....when one must explain a joke you realize that it has failed.

Note the comment I posted with the wall. It is clear from that that the wall was a social comment and a temporary one at that.
The totally ODD thing about it all was that 300-odd people downloaded it....now that is truly sad.

But many people understood the tragic irony of the piece and got a laugh out of it.

As for the other one...[you referred to two]...that was a simple example for someone to see how a blur effect could be achieved...again it was clearly not a wall...but again a lot of people seemed to want to DL it. It was a teaching example...the original graphics belonged to Dangeruss...which was emblazonned across the wall in huge fonts just to make that clear, but still people DL'd it...

Both walls will be deleted.....try not to get all neurotic over them...just understand their 'motivation'....

Is this the automatic rating from the server or are you on the favorite list?

That would be the rating a moderator gives it when it is approved, Delicious.

Jam: The visitors do not see the ratings. Citizens do not see the ratings unless they are Subscribers. Every Subscribwer can rate and every apprentice and above can rate, so if there isn't enough ratings, there are enough people to rate. So it's the peoples fault for not rating. Must be 50,000 who can rate.

Delicious: Of course I'm on the favorite list, and my farts smell like roses.

I do want the code for that automatic, art-critic server script, though. I think it is often the australian program they use for spell checking.

In my recent ratings problems I never once disagreed with the low rating. All I wanted was to hear from the person who gave me the rating so that I could learn. This is still a learning experience for me and input is vital. The rating is all I have to go on to judge how well I'm doing. When I receive a low rating I will always call upon the person who gave me that rating to please list ways in which I could improve the skin. So, if someone wants to give me a low rating the need to be prepared for me to consistently try and call them out to list those ways.

I did receive great input from Lecrayon on what might be wrong with the skin.
From my Skinbase upload I received invaluable advice from chichigirl of many things I could do to make the skin better.

This was all I was after in the first place.

I still await a response from the person who rated the skin low.

Hi WOM, thanks for the info...

I know I'm too concerned with the numbers right now, but I'm sure that will get old hat after awhile.

This has been an interesting thread if nothing else............

Just to help set the record straight, I was one of the 300 odd people who downloaded Jafo's JOKE wall and I gave it a joke 10 rating. Jafo and I had a discussion about these types of programs that generate walls about 6-8 months ago. I said I did one in 5 min. that was as good as some of those that were uploaded, but wouldn't uploaded it. Well Jafo did and thats why I did what I did. He used Bryce and I did it in Terregan.
