Another bug..

I've found another bug within these apps.. I don't know where to email bugs, so could someone give me an email or forward this?

I've been customizing my OS..(as usual). And I noticed that the programs are pretty stable. For the most part from best to worse on stability the list goes..

1. WindowBlinds
2. ObjectBar
3. WinFX.
4. SystemMetrix

WinFX (the worse)
I have my WinFX running with exceptions on:

ObjectBar.Exe
Explorer.exe
SystemMetrix.Exe

Explorer.exe is basically the Windows desktop. Everything is running from this application. The program really only crashes when shadows are turned on. I recieve a DIBENG.DLL error.

The shadow effects are a bit buggy.

The ObjectBar also crashes when WinFX is running shadow features. Yielding the same error.

If WinFX is unloaded the two apps run flawlessly...

So, the developers should look at the Win9x,ME implemenation of the shadow effects & its effects on explorer.exe & Objectbar.exe

SystemMetrix runs now but usually locks my machine up at shutdown. (I'm going to verify if this is cause by WinFX running, and will report back later.)

System Info:

Pentium 3 600Mhz laptop
320MB Ram.. (Yea! more RAM improve things)
10Gig HD
WinME Operating System

I have hardly any other software running on this laptop so the developers don't have to worry about weird errors from outside applications.

Thanks for reading..

You're biggest bug is ME....

............and I don't mean 'me', I mean ME Microsoft Effluvia.

Go away troll!

You don't know what you are talking about.. I'm just trying to make these applications more stable for the Win9x series.

You're a WinXP Microsoft clone..

I think Koasati has been around these applications long enough to be aware of what IS the most likely cause of any 'issues' with them.
Generally, ME is not exactly the best OS to handle much of anything, really, tending to be ridden with buggy goings-on.

Various shadow effects are limited to Win2K and XP and are not available in earlier OS vers.

Skinning applications are quite dependent on the capabilities of your graphic card and ram...more than anything else, being 'graphic-intensive'.

XP in particular is far, far more efficient at handling ram and protected processes so is by default a superior OS to use for these applications.

Apart from that, listen to tinkergaloot...

I would say from your response that you just believe what other people say instead of seeing for yourself.

I've written and entire video game engine & editor on Windows ME. The GDI engine appear to be just as stable as Win98. Furthermore, I've already posted bugs on this forum that aren't OS specific. (Like duplicate registry keys create by ObjectBar and Component Tray.)

If you guys were really paying attention to the software, wouldn't you have found that issue before a noobie like me?

In short, people who are blaming the OS are trolls..

They don't really help a program to become more stable. I've notice how areas of Windows blinds run transparent and sometimes fail.. This could be caused by a number of reasons. (But I assure you its NOT the OS.)

I'm only trying to help debug this application if the fact that I have WinME bothers you, please give me the email to the developers so I can contact them directly..

These forums have too many immature people.

Transparency is not supported in 98 and ME, never has been. That's the reason that there are always so many quirks involved with applications that roll their own. I find it hard to believe that a developer wouldn't understand that. I would really, really like a link to information on the software you have developed.

re: "please give me the email..."; that's the first reasonable thing you have said so far. Go here: ( https://www.stardock.com/support.asp ) and deal with this situation the way a real developer would have in the first place; by reporting what you consider bugs in a responsible, tactful way.

..or you could be the troll all of think you are and keep ranting about 'bugs' on a public forum which is, for the most part, unrelated with the software in question. Stardock owns this site, but this is not the Stardock software site.

My guess is you'll keep yapping here.

These forums are basically to discuss skins and skinning. If you want to discuss the applications used behind the skins, then perhaps the newsgroups would be a better forum. They can be found at news.stardock.com.

Come on guys. Please lets stop the religion war here. If the guy prefers Windows ME, it's his own prerogative. The apps he mentionned are said to function on Windows 98 and above. So if he wishes to report a bug about it, he can, right?
I perfer XP myself, but I'm not about to start a war about it.

Sorry... I didn't mean to start a war. It just seems odd to me that someone who can find all these bugs, can't seem to locate the email for stardock support.

pfft. He's not here to post bugs. If he was interested in bugs, he'd use the form at stardock support or be ranting in the newsgroup.

He wandered in, saw someone griping, and thought he'd boost his ego a bit. I don't care if he uses ME or not, but when he makes statements that are utterly wrong and then tries to pose as a developer to make them 'seem' right, he should assume he's gonna get flamed.

WindowFX doesn't technically support shadows under Windows ME. Certainly not alpha blended shadows. The shareware version of WindowFX, for instance, supposedly doesn't even allow you to install unless you're running Windows 2000 or later.

Yes, I HAVE been known to believe what other people say instead of seeing for yourself, but only when I can honestly trust the source from years of experience and knowing the person well....but mostly I get my system to crash and burn, then try to work out 'why' and how.

I've been in this skinning/themeing/alternate shell game long enough to have found all sorts of dramas, either with my own or with others' systems.
And I know how to RTFM.

Your problem appears to be that being new to this 'community' you assume we are all idiots and you are our saviour.

It reminds me of the kid on Skimz.org about 3 years ago who said...'Hi, I'm 13 and have been working with computers for 2 years....any problems, I can help, let me know'.

Bit sad, that....I was probably messing with computers before his parents were born...[almost]...

i know his mentallity, remember to know someone best u should be like them and i am im only a kid, and kids think they know everything (i do ) and they try and show it off, most of the time we give up after we are proven wrong it just seems explorer is digging a very large hole for himself

btw i still havea commodore 64 in my attic, great machine, can play pong =D
Reply #17 Top
tinker...no, I gave it away to my nephews years ago...but I do have an emulator so I can still play Commando...

BTW...my first 'foray' was well before Commodores....back in 1970...punch cards and a Fortran...while still at school...
Oh, man. The C-64 had better games than Pong. Omega Race was an awesome game back in the old days.

Commando...a third-person '3D' scrolling shoot-em-up...[kill the hostages too]...and a wild, thumping, heavy-metal soundtrack...

OK, so I exaggerated a tad...

'allounce'...you know, I bet the Yanks really wish it was spelled that way...

Omega Race.... I would love to have a PC version of that game.
