Only if you put a match to it

Seriously though, the answer is no. To record on DVD-R you need a DVD-R writer. You can only burn CD-R and CD-RW with a CD writer.

Alternatively you can burn a video CD on a CD-R disc. Most DVD players will be able to play it, but it still won't be a DVD.

whoa Paxx... could you explain that a little more? I've got some .avi files I want to put on CD to play in a dvd player...I didn't know that was possible. What software would I need? What filetype would the .avi need to be turned into..etc.

warewolf: there are a number of programs you can use, TMPGEnc is freeware.
Check out this page, it shows you how to do it with a number of apps: http://www.vcdhelp.com/convert.htm

Kinrik, yes. Check this page: http://www.vcdhelp.com/sefy/?id=ClassicalGuide.html

well, that was an interesting experience indeed

I spent all day learning about all this stuff, I encoded a few .avi's to .mpg and burned them on a cd, following all procedures and ended up with 3 coasters. I have never heard of a *Video* CD I just burned them on CD-R's, which work fine with software players, but didn't do squat on my DVD. So, if anybody is going to try this, you need *video* CD's. I don't know what the difference is, but apparently there is one.

Thanks, Paxx, for the links...they provide all the information one needs, except for the fact that you need *video* CD's.

if you use NERO there is an option to make avi or mpg to VCD. it is better to convert to mpg then burn otherwize you got to hope that nero will do it right the first time. i have wasted an few hours on waiting for nero to convert then not converting right. or if you want go to vcdhelp.com to learn other ways to do it. hope this helps

Thanks joes_box...I think I now know a very great deal about making vcd's I ended up with a few separate apps, one for encoding and one for burning them. But, I was burning them onto regular CD-R's. According to my DVD manual, it needs to have Video CD's, apparently a different animal...

/me goes shopping

if your dvd player states it can play mp3 files, then it should be able to read off of cd-r's, right? doesn't say it can read non-mp3's or non-dvd's, but the hardware the mp3/dvd is written on CAN be a cr-d, right? it isn't saying i HAVE to write mp3's to a blank dvd to play it in the dvd player, right?

werewolf, as I said, MOST DVD players will be able to play VCD's burned on CD-R's. But you can check this compatibility list: http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=&vcd=1&Submit2=Search&Search=Search&viewall=0&order=0

kinrik: My home dvd player can play "Video CD... it shows a logo which includes the words Digital Video... and then it has a logo "Video CD Version 2.0" (which is what I burned them with.. v2.0). It also says it plays "Music CD" ...the logo includes the words "Digital Audio". It says that it will *not* play DVD-ROM, CD-Rom, CD-R, SVCD, CVD" So, it would seem that I have to find a very specific kind of CD called a Video CD and burn my files onto that.

Paxx: My player is listed at that site. The comments vary. Some said burning onto cd-r's worked, some said it didn't. I have no idea in which direction to go at this point. I used vcdeasy and its cdrdao to burn, maybe I should try it again using the bin/cue method?
