Interesting question. If I made my desktop transparent I would be able to see the inside of the monitor.

Is there a new setting that I never heard about?

There a several ways to make your desktop icon background transparent.
If you're using WindowBlinds........ open the configuration dialog.........Settings.........Enhance Desktop elements......second entry.

Don't know if you can do this with the shareware version.

In the Settings Part of WindowBlinds, under "Enhance Desktop elements"
Check the box that says "Make desktop icon text backgrounds transparent", Then click apply

If you use Windows XP it is possible to accomplish this. Right click on My Computer chose properties, then the advanced tab, under the heading Performance chose Settings in the Visual Effects box scroll down to the second last item it should be called "use drop shadows for icon labels on desktop" check this box and apply the new setting.

Hope this helps unfortunately I don't believe this is possible with other operating systems with out third party software.
