Does it have one of those dialogs pop up to send a report to Microsoft about a system crash? Sometimes those have some useful information about why it crashed.

No it doesent, it really odd because it just restarts suddenly without any cause. Last time i got this error message at the beginning that something was trying to write over my memory and when i sent in the error report for "System has recoverd a serious error" it just says some driver tried to write over the memory but does not list which driver it is.

I will tell you how to fix your problem if you can tell me how to fix mine.

Just recently IE has been giving me headaches. To open a new session or click on a link takes forever. It just sits there and waits for 10-30 seconds. No or little cpu activity. Just sits there. Normally its very fast.

Ok, by default Windows XP is set to restart if a program crashes. The fix is on the winxp > expert users sectin of the microsoft.com website.

haven't experienced that problem T-Man, but alp65 I have had that problem, a lot, on 2 computers. Don't know why. Both with XP.Even did a clean install of XP.It still re-boots now and again and sometines I get that dreaded blue screen. Whatever happened to DOS!

The rebooting is actually a feature honest!

Better way then that. Right click My Computer, choose properties > Advanced > Start up and Recovery > Settings > System Failure and uncheck 'Automatically Restart'. However, that won't solve the problem, but it will leave you with a pretty blue screen on crashing and a description of the problem. Which leads me to...
Does it say something like 'ACPI bios tried to write to an invalid memory address'? Have a look in event viewer to see if there's a line in there which says something like 'system has rebooted following a bugcheck'
If you come up with a more specific error message maybe I can diagnose the problem for you. Maybe the blue screen will say more.

As for your problem T-Man, sounds like the site you're trying to connect to doesn't have enough bandwidth - recommend they add a new server

Sometimes when programs are slow or I have problems with apps, I click on My Computer, right click on my hard drive, select properties,at the top choose tools and do the error checking. You have to restart for it to check your cpu. It works for me and it dosen't hurt.

What you are using there is the XP equivalent of scandisk. It checks the hard drive not the cpu. Another way of running this is to go to a command prompt and type 'chkdsk /f', XP will then run a check of all drives on next reboot.

Fuzzy I'm using XP I just about the long way.

More useful tips from uncle Fuzzy, part 2.

Useful item that command prompt. Say you have a second partition, D:, which you would like to format. If you are using the NTFS file system XP mostly refuses to format the drive saying it's in use (usually cos of that damned recycle bin). If you open the command prompt and type 'format D:', it will allow you to dismount the drive first before formatting it.

Did you upgrade to WinXP from WinMe or did it come pre-installed?

While I agree that useful answers are preferable to smart alec comments, there is no need to tell people to shut up, dditrimer. You should take a little more time to write your posts before you start giving advice on how others write theirs. It's not easy to decipher your run-on sentence with its random punctuation and lack of capitalization.
