~ When I try to add an "additional component" to a new object or even an existing object, DX crashes along with Explorer. Any ideas why this happens when I try to add a plugin?

Might be that the plug-in is bad. I used to have the same problem using one of the older plug-ins (it was included with the object). Make sure you have the latest verion. Which plug-in causes the crash?

~ I'm not sure because I can't add one. As soon as I hit the ADD button, it crashes.

I had that problem too. I forget which plugin caused it. Try renaming all the plugins and adding each one back until it crashes. that should isolate the problem plugin.
