Stupid WinStyles/Component Manager!!! *Bam!* *Bam!* *Bam!*

ARGH! Something is wrong with WinStyles! Every time I try to load it, it says, "We're sorry, but WinStyles has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

So, I open up component manager, and Voila! I find the new version of WinStyles (1.31 I think). So, I install it, and it gives me the same error message. I then uninstall the first version, and try to uninstall the second versions. It won't let me, because it thinks that they don't exist, so I delete their installation files and try to re-download the new version. I don't know what it is doing, but there is no way it is downloading the complete file again, because it only takes it about 5 seconds to finish a 1 meg file (I'm on a 56K modem). But, I try to install it anyway, and it keeps giving me the same stupid error! (with the WinStyles 1.20 heading on the box). Any ideas on how to fix?

You could try cleaning out all references of WinStyles from your system and trying again...Uninstall, Clean out all WinStyle Installation Files And Clean out the WinStyles Directory, Put your Themes in another Directory if you dont want to lose them. Its worth a try.

Looking at your method of installation and removal, that has left vestiges of registry entries, etc on your system, I'd say the problem wasn't WITH WinStyles, but that WinStyles found a problem with your system. [as it indicated].

We can all be guilty from time to time of less-than-sanitary program installation and removal, for whatever reason, and subsequently have 'issues' with a later install of a different proggy. Lost dll's or just the wrong versions is usually the problem, ultimately you get sufficiently pee'ed-off with the whole thing and resort to a clean OS install.
Remember, with popular, common proggies, unless you see squillions of similar complaints, it's most likely that if you have a problem with a proggy, and no-one else appears to be, the problem is your system and not the proggy...

Elvee: Where exactly are the WinStyle Installation Files? I went to look and wasn't sure exactly where they were, and I don't want to just start randomly deleting things.

Jafo: That was thoroughly unhelpful. I assumed that it was the job of the component manager to delete old files and stuff. Oh well.

They are in the Object Desktop directory as .Cab files, ws(xx).cab and ws(xx).cab.cmi

After reading your problem, it occurs to me that you are probably running WinMe. The only solution to this problem is forward or backward. (Win98 or WinXP) After drinking gallons and gallons of coffee many sleepless nights I finally figured it out As Jafa said the prob is not DesktopX or Winstyles. The prob is your crappy os Here is what I did to find the prob. Install each skin indivually. window blinds, web blinds, Icons.that will narrow the field and tell you which app is causing your trouble. Mine was IE 6. I deleted IE6 and reinstalled it and everything was fine. Oh and you should send ol' Bill Gates the tab for that moniter.

Thanks elvee.

CycleKitty: I have XP Home. (Yay!) I'll *never* use ME when it isn't necessary; my family has it on one of their computers and it runs slow as anything.

To the rest of you: Glad to be entertaining. ::takes a bow::
