Just what do you do?

I'm curious as to how may people here make their living (or a signifigant portion) in the graphics or design areas as opposed to other lines of work.

Ok I'll kick it off.

I've dabbled in web design since 1994 and graphics since 1995. In 1999 I got serious about both and started taking the occasional class as well as making some of my work public. Over the past two years I have gone commercial as a freelance web designer.

I started doing graphics when I was 18 (1968), working for a publishing company doing book covers and illustrations for college textbooks plus layout and paste-up. In those days text was done by typesetters and display or headline fonts you drew with a pen. I started using computers to do some ad layout work in '89 and then started doing illustration too on the computer in about '94. Today I do mostly package design, product illustration and advertising. Been freelancing for the last two years...

Never touched a computer until July of 98, stumbled upon skinz.org (the brown one) in September 98. Starting doing wallpapers, and having 50% or more rejected by _shoggot_ (actually he was too kind) Starting trying my hand at skinning after a year of torturing the shogster. Now I can't stop.......*help*

So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one -- big hitter, the Lama -- long, into a ten-thousand foot crevice, right at the base of this glacier. And do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga...gunga -- gunga galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consiousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

Made my first LiteStep gig in about 98 or 99 (too far back to remember). Went on to make my first WB skin using only MS Paint and Notepad (UO Skin)... As much as I'd like to use Photoshop, I can't seem to break away from Image Composer, the cheesy little image proggy that shipped with FrontPage 98...
