What are some ways to reduce logon filesizes?

I tried simply not including files that I didn't use, but that produced error messages up the wazoo. What are some other good ways to reduce file size?

Reducing the color depth of the images will help.

I'm wondering, now that I know it checks to see whether or not certain images are there, does it also check their sizes? I was thinking that I could make unused images 1px x 1px.

For a wallpaper which is usually done in BMP, zipped you can save it to JPEG and zip it and save on file size. Not sure if you can do that also with a logon but I would think you can. Maybe someone who does logons will confirm or non-confirm this.

I've tried doing that, the logon editor converted it into a bmp every time.

You can use only .bmps.
On the files that you aren't using ........I could be wrong, but I think they have to be there. You may not be using them, but that doesn't mean I won't use them. I may be totally off base there, but it sounds logical to me.

Ok, that makes sense to me. But do you know if I can reduce their size to 1px by 1px? Most people don't touch their logons so I don't give a hoot if you want to I don't know about you, but filesize is important to me.

Is this for personal use, or for upload? The reason I ask is, if I were to download your logon and some of the images I need are just 1x1 specks........well you get the picture.
I don't know if you can do that or not.........and yes file size is important to me, but only when uploading or downloading, not if it will only be on my machine.

Have you tried the color depth reduction?

I'll try reducing most of the graphics to 16bit. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get photoshop to do 8 bit bmp graphics.

Jobeleca,
I had the same idea, reducing unused images to 1pxX1px and it worked fine on my machine. But, a friend of mine told me that she couldn't see some of the images that she was using on her machine. She had several accounts and was using a different configuration for her logons so she was using some of the images I reduced in size. So, I had to redo the entire logon

I am not sure if the colour depth reduction idea will work but it never hurts to try. In fact, I have learned so much about skinning just from making mistakes. Mistakes can your friend.
