Account Settings Bug

The "Available Libraries" feature in account settings is partially non-functional. Basically if I set everthing in one user session it works properly as long as I keep my browser open. However, if I close my browser and open it again all of the checkboxes in available libraries have been reset to their defaults.

This is something that needs to be fixed.

Library settings are still managed by a cookie. As long as you are accepting and retaining cookies form this site your settings will remain intact. It is not this site that is not functional, you just need to adjust how your browser handles cookies...

Ok, thank you. I have my browser set to dump cookies every so often.

When do you think it will be server based like the other preferences are?

I personally have no idea. The site is maintained by T-Man and Alexandrie. If any changes are made, they are usually behind it.

If you don't accept cookies, you are going have problems like this on almost every site you visit. I personally don't see any reason not to accept them.

Mike, a large number of the sites I visit store preferences on the server. This is especially good since I often use 5 or 6 different computers each day, of which only 1 doesn't get reimaged everytime it boots up. Yes, I have to login each time I access the sites, but I also don't have hundreds of cookies fouling up my system, tracking my browsing habits, and revealing where I've been.

I'm one of those people who care about security and privacy. My history is set at 0, my cache is cleared whenever I close my browser, and my cookies are cleared whenever I clear my browser. In addition I run two programs that sweep all my temp files at the end of every day.

And if you wonder how effective my precautions are, consider that I've had a computer since 1986 and have been using the internet since 1989 without ever getting a single virus.

I've never heard of a virus coming from cookies...........

I agreed with you up there, because I've always had trouble with the libraries going back to default, so much so that I stopped setting them...........but now that I think about it, I haven't tried them since Alex fixed it so the messageboard doesn't use cookies.

I've got IE to only accept and keep cookies from wincustomize. All others are on a per-session basis.

werewolf, how did you do that?

My main objection to cookies are the ones that are set by ads. If other sites are affected, that's just too bad. If WinCustomize was completely based on cookies I wouldn't be complaining. It's just that a lot of the good stuff has been moved to being server based, with a few forgotten areas that make themselves all the more noticeable by omission.

I guess I'm complaining that while they've done a good job, they didn't finish it.

Remember, everything takes time. No need to complain, just try a suggestion.

True, ok, I'll wait another month before I do this thread again.

WOM: In IE, go to Tools>Internet Options>Privacy>advanced...
check "override automatic cookie handling"
check "blocked" for both First Party and Third Party Cookies.
check "Always allow session cookies"
Click OK

When that dialog box disappears, click "edit"
Type in www.wincustomize.com in the "address of web site" box
click "Allow"
Then OK your way out of all that stuff.

These settings are permanent, however, if you ever tell IE to erase all your cookies, the wincustomize cookie will go also, but the settings remain.

Using a hosts file to block cookies and ads is another way to avoid ads, cookies, web bugs and other tracking stuff. Then one can accept cookies for what one wants, either permanently or session only. Steve Martin's host file entries are fairly well known and used, although there are some other resources for this. I just mention this in case anyone is interested.

Other resources, although I don't know if the link will work out ok here:

Or Eric Howes' main page:
