New section Idea - XP boot screens

Why not add a section to feature XP boot screens. This would, IMHO, be the ultimate addition to customizing Windows XP. BootXP is a great tool for changing the XP boot screen on your computer - I would imagine there are other tools available as well.

No, no, a logon is the screen that lets you "logon" to the computer.
An XP boot screen is the screen that shows up BEFORE the logon screen and it usually says "Microsoft Windows..." and has the scrolling blue progress bar. The XP boot screen is what I think many people will want to change once they see how easy it is.
I cannot find a section for XP boot screens on WinCustomize.

oh, oh...now I understand...sorry, total mental block there. I know what you're referring to. I used to change that with win98. It was just an image file. Couldn't you just post your boot screen pic to the graphics or wallpaper section with a comment to its use?

Mmmm, I understood it was dangerous to mess with the boot screen. Do so at your own peril...

I seem to remember it was more like using reshacker to replace an image in a system dll.

I don't know about XP, but with 98 it was 100% safe (well, mostly). The only thing you have to be careful to do is backup your old boot screen in case you want to restore it. This is something that can easily be done in a program. Maybe stardock isn't doing it because it's just too easy

You use a program to change the boot screen to the one you want. I am currently using BootXP to do this, but I would imagine there are other programs available on the 'net to do the same thing.
You use BootXP to choose an image file and click a button and BootXP sets the image file as your new boot screen - easy as that. You can even change the position of the scrolling progress bar. I found BootXP at www.bootxp.net.
ArtUproar, deskMod, and DeviantArt all have a section for boot screens, so I am proposing WinCustomize create a section for them as well.
My sister knows next to nothing about computers and she used BootXP to change her boot screen to an LCARS inteface in less than five minutes!

Here's why I don't bother with those:

1) I recall that the resolution is really crappy - 16 colors max and small dimensions. Given those stringent requirements, you're not going to be able to do much to make the boot screen look very nice.

2) It only shows up on my machine for about 1-2 seconds. Plus, I only reboot every few days. So, it's something that I'd see for a couple of seconds per week. Therefore, it's not worth spending a lot of time on.

Dude, apparently since you posted this bootxp thing, it has been removed fromt the web. The website is down and download.com says the title is no longer available.

Thank you, Xymantix, that is certainly something to take into consideration. However, there are others who may find, as I have, that this is a way of customizing, or rather "personalizing", one's machine. And, my boot screen looks nice. There is a site with some information, a download for BootXP, and a small choice of boot screens here:

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and mine is that changing the boot screen is just as cool as changing the login screen.

It seems that the download sites for BootXP are temporarily unavailable.
I am going to upload the program to my website and post the address later.

If I cannot blink or I will miss it, then it's not worth the bother. My opinion.

IIRC with XP to replace the Boot Screen you have to basically swap the kernel for a customised one. Bearing in mind that a dead kernel means XP won't boot I can't see wincustomize hosting them.

Not worth it.
In Windows 95/98, sure, one has to reboot a couple of times a day.
But my average uptime with XP is somewhere around 25-30 days. Certainly not worth the bother.

As usual, people who don't quite know the WHOLE story are posting their opinions. What happens if you replace the res image in the kernal with a new res image that uses the same pal and 16 colors? BootXP does this for you with one mouse click. By the way, even with a bad NTOSKRNL.EXE file, Windows XP is able to boot into "safe mode" (kinda tells you how important that file is, huh?)

Nyah Nyah Once you start something you can't kill it, only let it die a natural death. Abortion is for the real world, not WC.

Sorry Brian, I didn't mean to come off being rude or hostile. One of the points that I was trying to make was that, since I don't have a ton of free time, it's probably a better use of my time to skin something that I see for hours each day.
