Windows XP Service Pack 1 breaks the custom boot screens!

I installed XP Service Pack for XP Pro one on a workstation with "Rocky Shore" boot screen and the computer refused to boot with the "custom boot screen" active! I had to reboot into safe mode using the CD - the hard drive safe mode only crashed the computer as well! I deleted the boot.ini file and rebooted and got back in. I recreated the boot.ini file WITHOUT the custom boot screen and all is well! Freaking M$ pack ruins the pretty boot!!! Linux is STILL king!!!

Forgot to mention, the machine does not have a custom login screen since it's on a NetWare Network - anyone know what the status is for a custom logon screen as well? I don't want to try the upgrade on my home machine until I hear otherwise.

Never Mind! I found the info at www.belchfire.net
Don't say I didn't warn you about SP1 for XP!
(I hope I didn't break a rule posting the URL?)

SP1 didn't hurt me. Of course, I also didn't mess around with any system files.

Art: Replacing the boot screen replaces the NT kernel in which it is contained. If you try and upgrade everything and keep the kernel you're obviously going to have problems - it's like trying to plug a keyboard into a mouse port and expecting it to work.

Actually, I got warned about this when I tried to install - it didn't let me.

I installed SP1 AFTER I opted to restore the original boot.ini file. Then I installed SP1 and have had no problems. Pretty sure I won't customized my boot after this. Not worth those big problems.

SP1 causes problems if you have done any of the following:

Patched your kernal (boot screens)
Replaced your logonui.exe (non .logonXP logons)
Patched your uxtheme.dll (msstyles)

Of course, last year when I warned people that this would happen I was accused of spreading FUD.

I just took 3 hours to dl SP1. I just remembered the warnings too late to disrupt the install of SP1 and feared the absolute worst scenerio. Then to my amazement the install went absolutely flawlessly. Some may have problems and others may not. Go back to the original boot then after the update reinstall your logon. 2 cents worth.

Ive installed SP 1, but it fudged up my logon screen so than now it is just a black screen with a generic logon box. Is there a way to resore the origional screen and/or some place I can DL it?

I haven't had any problems with the SP1 pack, but shortly after that one came out there is this java one. I am having some troubles with that one. I'm starting to wonder if my programs aren't more patch than original!

I started having miscellaneous problems after installing SP-1 and decided to uninstall it. Everything is back to normal and all weird glitches have disappeared. Perhaps it would be best to do a complete reinstall of the OS followed immediately by the SP-1 update, but I won't do that unless I have to...

Jim How do you uninstall SP 1? Just in case I need to.

Thanks in advance

I think you can uninstall SP1 from the Add or Remove Programs screen. I did a new install with SP1 slipstreamed, so I can't check, but I believe that's the case.

There is an option to backup your old files BEFORE you install SP1. If you did not do that you are stuck with it...
