Where does Wincustomize stuff go when you delete it?

I always blow the installations, so in object desktop, all the versions are there. I thought I should clean it out so I deleted some. But today I downloaded 3.41, and in my cleaning spree I deleted it. I looked in my trash can, not there. Same with lots of other things, they just poof....

Is there anyway to retrieve something you delete too fast? I am redownloading 3.41.... sorry about the bandwidth.

Done that too GM! If you open the case to your tower you can probably find them between your graphics card and the power supply...

Thanks...

No GM, you'll be glueing code back together.......in proper sequence, else you will have Babya instead of WindoBlinds.

ohoh, you mean..... i have to glue together a lot of 111 and 000? Um.... kind of like a frankenlab.... I might come up with something really good, or really bad.....

I played with some law-enforcement harddrive forensics software once. It was decent, but I only found stuff around a month old, and it was badly fragmented. I have seen claims that federal spooks can pull text files and images that are *years* old, regardless of wiping software. I'm dubious, but they seem to come up with a lot of stuff for evidence that way. What I used was good enough to save a half dozen or so files I couldn't have replaced. I think it is available as a trial version somewhere.

just an aside... back to the nuttiness...

Aha.... so if I want that particular copy of wb3.41 back, all I have to do is to turn my computer over to the feds? wonder what the turn-around time is on that these days......

they seem to come up with a lot of stuff for evidence that way that middle part there kind of makes me nervous......

It should... a good deal of harddrive forensics is "reconstruction"... if you get my meaning.

It was actually the mention of glueing pixels together that made me think of it...

It must be kind of fascinating, though, doing that. Must be a specialist field...

Computers, everything about them, get more complicated the more you learn. Just tonight I was wondering about my old computer. If I sold it, what if I sold it to an "evildoer"... how liable might I be... makes me kind of want to hang on to it just in case. I sure would hate to end up down in Guantanimo Bay just for selling my computer to the wrong person....

Norton SystemWork Pro might help GM. It does entail by passing any GUI though. However in such circumstances I usually restore a previous backup from CD. Or I try to recover everything by removing the HD and shaking it like an Etch-A-Sketch until everything is back in place.

/me leaps to the rescue

there are two well know effects around here:
a) it ends up in the basement, and crae eats it. this is what tends to happen to all of the bandwidth you know

b) it fell though one of the swirly portals. if that happened then sooner or later werewolf or i should find it on one of our romps. the only problem then is if it looks like it might be edible . . .

but feline.... if you ate that particular code, you would be wearing your skin on the inside!

/me considers the effects of being skinnable

that would mean that i changed from one look to a completely different look at the flip of a switch . . .

dracoform points out that scales are quite different to fur

ah, good point.
you know this would be a lot easier of dracoforms posts were in a different colour.

anyway, it would seem that i may have already eaten several versions of this code. have you been doing a lot of deleting of late GM?

/me gives fair warning to one and all to avoid pixels and bits of code flying far and wide since this is the day that the old computer gets reformatted and she expects quite a shimmering cloud of beauty as she shakes her hard drive like a giant etch-a-sketch (thanks old crab, I was wondering how to go about reformatting)and all of the beautiful skins and icons and walls disperse....

Not a good day for a picnic at all!
actually this sounds like an ideal time for a picnic!

/me can lie back, enjoy lovely picknic food, and watch the really lovely clouds and rainbows produced by all of the flying pixcels!

perhaps we should reward GM for her contributions to this new and exciting form of art / skinning?

since i dont seem to have any spare medals at the moment, how about a chocolate button?

/me wonders what it is that the chocolate button is going to hold closed, for surely it won't last long.....
actually i hadent thought of that. in the UK they sell packs of chocolate buttons. you get about 20 small buttons in a little bag, and they are mainly aimed at kids.

personally i think they are lovely to eat, since they are smooth on top and have a cross hatch pattern underneath.

however, since you ask, um, well, um

Running XP you can turn your entire hard drive back in time. Twilight Zone time. There is a however, if you don't have it turned on it won't work and if you did more than 20% of your drive worth of activity after deletion then it won't work.
heh... I thought about that... then I thought it might not work since I hadn't even installed the files yet!

/me worries what's going to happen if she gets too hungry and eats her chocolate buttons... or someone else does...
...thanks GM for the imagery, but i'm trying to work

/ME now realizes that his engineering report looks very similar to wincustomize...

/me organises an armed escort to get GM back to the marathon thread safely, and with buttons all intacked
