Please HELP

Hi all. I D/L'ed and installed Object Desktop 2 days ago, and it has never worked right for me. However, I know it seems to work fine for lots of people, so I'm not going to sit here and slam it. Rather, I'm just going to ask for your help.

My problem is this: today I downloaded a Win Styles theme, and in the process of trying to apply it, I was told that Win Styles had detected that I did not have Logon Studio, and I was asked if I wanted to install it. I clicked on OK, and since then, Win XP won't shut down! I have tried uninstalling Logon Studio to no avail. I tried using System Restore, but since XP won't shut down, System Restore can't complete its job. Does anyone have any ideas? Also, if I just unplug my machine to power it off, when I turn it back on, I get a different logon screen than I used to (in other words, I get a screen that asks me for a password rather than getting the Welcome Screen). I can click OK at that screen without applying a password, but it's still not what I used to have.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Please allow me to clarify something in my earlier message. When I say I tried uninstalling Logon Studio to no avail, I mean to say that I was able to uninstall it, but it made no difference in my inability to shut down XP.

Sorry if that was confusing!

I'm sorry I can't help with everything, but the different logon screen is what Logon Studio does...It changes your logon screen.

Maybe I have an idea (about the welcome screen).

Try opening User Accounts in Control Panel.

"Use the Welcome Screen." must be turned on

Thanks Komarino, but I tried that and it didn't help.

Anyway, the problem is now fixed. Werewolf's message reminded me of something I hadn't even thought of -- that the theme I had downloaded had not only requested installion of Logon Studio, but actually changed my Logon screen in the process. So it appears I uninstalled LS prematurely; I therefore reinstalled LS, restored my default XP logon screen, and now it's working the way it used to. Apparently, when you get the logon screen that asks for an actual password, and only one user is logged on, it can cause XP to not shut down. I learned this at the MS Knowledge Base, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q320008.

Anyway, thanks to all of you for reading this and helping me out. I guess I just panicked when I couldn't shut down, and I had a blonde moment (yes, I'm blonde, so I can say that ).

Oops, that link won't work, because there's a period at the end of the URL that should not be there. Sorry, I've never posted here until today, so I'm still learning the conventions of this message board. The proper link is http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q320008

hello jane,I had some of the same problems you were having. After recovering from blindly using Apps I should have read about first,I now,the second time around, started slowly and with great caution. It seems like a good place to start is Winowsblinds/CursorXP/wallpapers/icons.After you get the hang of finding what you like and downloading it and then applying it,I would then move on to Desktopx/Winstyles/Logonstudio.Not that any of this is difficult it just seems to go down a bit better without the massive changes that happen with a full blown theme change. And it seems that when some of these things a clicked to apply they automaticly add themselves to your startup process,in some cases fighting it out with eachother at bootup.I found this out the hard way too. Before you shut down ,look into your startup manager and disable the Apps that are going to start with your next boot. You can always invoke them after your machine is up and on solid ground.

Thanks for the tips Brazil! That's pretty much what I've decided to do.

And again, thanks to everyone for your interest in helping!
