Custom Tiles Feature Request
Pre-Fluff
I'd like to start off by saying you guys are awesome. I very much enjoyed Sins of a Solar Empire and I was shocked when I found out you were also behind Fences, which I used in Windows 7. Now I'm on Windows 8 and I decided to get Start8, Decor8, and ModernMix to complete my Windows 8 experience. Thanks to those three applications, I can enjoy the many benefits of Windows 8 without the sometimes-annoying UI changes getting in the way. You guys are awesome!
Fluff
I run a custom desktop on a plasma TV. The TV is good quality and it works amazingly save for one caveat: images burn in more easily on plasma TVs. Image retention is common on plasmas and, though it isn't permanent like burn-in, it can be common and annoying for someone using it as a monitor. To combat this I use a frequently rotating desktop background and have my taskbar set to auto-hide, but desktop icons are still static. In Windows 7, this was easily fixed with Fences. Windows 8, however, game me the chance to clear up my desktop entirely and instead use the metro.
Contrary to the popular opinion, I am actually quite fond of the metro because it allows me to elegantly arrange what would otherwise be a mess of desktop icons into a visually appealing and easily accessible menu. I could use my fancy Start8 menu to achieve a similar feat, but I actually never really cared for the start menu that much; it's a pain to organize and has too many menus so I tend to reserve it for access to system features (control panel, explorer, run, etc) and applications which I rarely use. The metro is definitely my go-to for a hidden but easily-accessible applications menu (mapped conveniently to my windows key a-la Start8).
Unfortunately, one of the many features missing from the metro is the ability to make custom metro tiles. Of course you can make tiles for desktop applications, but they look absolutely horrible. OblyTiles fixes this in a way, but it's fragile, lacks many of the features which are given to desktop shortcuts, and requires users to dig out the file path for ever executable (which isn't always possible, especially if you have to use Origin to run some of your games). I use a metro application called "PinSteam" to easily add my Steam library to the metro, but for my Origin games, UPlay games, and other desktop applications I just can't be bothered to dig out each executable, make a custom tile, and get it all set up. I'm sure you know where this is going by now.
It would be awesome if Start8 (or perhaps Decor8) included the ability to create and manage custom tiles for the metro. I'm talking about a feature that would let you create metro tiles in the same way one would create a shortcut (given a selection of currently-installed applications and option for a custom target), edit metro tiles with the same flexibility as is allowed to shortcuts (rename, target, run in window/maximized/minimized, security options, comparability options, etc), provide tools for the user to customize a tile's appearance (background color, black/white text, custom image), modify some visual properties of tiles for native metro applications, and conveniently manage all your created and modified tiles.
Hopefully other people want this too and I'm not just crazy. I thought about suggesting improvements to the OblyTiles developer(s?), but Stardock has done such a great job with improving my OS experience that I figured you guys would just do a better job of it. Even if this idea isn't considered to be worth developing, I'd like to thank you for the great stuff you've made and I'll look forward to your next application.
Post-Fluff (read as tl;dr)
Please add the ability to create custom metro tiles for desktop applications. Support for re-designing tiles for native metro apps would also be nice, but is significantly less important. Also, Start8 rocks.
