1) Tell your Dad to stay off your computer or stay of his! 2 people and 1 computer is always going to cause trouble.

2) Try this:

p.s. - This is a message board not a help desk. While there is no problem in asking questions please don't get pissy if you do not get an answer!

EAC is not the most user friendly of programs - it requires a little bit of time to setup and workout what does what. Another program you could try is http://www.cdex.n3.net/

EAC is about the best out there. Just click on the "I'm an Idiot" button and it sets itself up to record VBR @ 128kbs. It's really cool to watch it play on winamp because the kbs window bounces between 0 and 320 kbs through the entire song. The average length of the song works out to 128/130 kbs and is not any longer than if recorded at a straight 128, but because it's VBR the quality is much higher. Not to mention that it is all FREE...

EAC has an 'I'm an idiot' button? Damn, wish I know that before I spent about 1/2 hr setting it up

Incidentally, if anyone cares I'm using EAC with the LAME encoder set to '--alt preset standard -F' with the secure mode CD thingy. I've been redoing my entire CD collection using this and now my even my old and sratched CDs turn out 98% perfect quality hmmm only 50 cds to go

1. Tell your dad to stay away from your machine and reinstall.

2. ExactAudioCopy is _the_ app to use for your ripping needs. I've got it set up to high quality ripping (can take many hours) and then compress it to MusePack, which is _the_ lossy compression algorhythm.
There is some weird issue with newer builds of either EAC or mppenc (I suspect the latter), 'cos lately I just end up with .wavs instead of the .mpcs I wanted.

I should refrain from posting, but what the heck.

(stepping on the soapbox)

Computers and software are such complex and tempermental things that's it's rare that you can describe them accurately and definitively with absolutes. Therefore, to state or imply that EAC doesn't work with XP PRO and/or doesn't work well probably isn't accurate. A more accurate statement would be that you can't get it to work on *your* installation of XP PRO.

(steps off soapbox)

BTW, EAC works great on my W2K, XP Home, and SP Pro installations. Depending on your symptoms you may have an ASPI problem. What exactly were the symptoms?

That's pretty bad, alright. You could always try the brute force method of uninstalling, redownloading (in case something went awry or you've got an old version), and reinstalling.
