What do you do for motivation?

I'm sitting here in front of my monitor while gazing outsize. I'm watching the wind blow the trees back and forth while I see an occasional bird fly by or a squirrel run accross the ground. But I'm supposed to be starting a new project and just can't seem to get my thoughts organized.

What do you do to get yourself motivated or in the mood?

That's tough. Usually either a break doing something else to clear the mind (say play a quick online game of UT).

Or listen to music through headphones when I work. It blocks out everything else and helps me focus. Usually load music does the trick and creates a virtual wall.

Additionally if you need to get motivated for a project howabout beaking it down into smaller, descrete tasks and writing them out? Then tackle the first task. It makes the overall project more approachable, especially when motivation is down.

I usually spend a couple of hours looking at skins on WinCustomize and forget about the project I'm supposed to be working on.

I agree with Chris that music helps quite a bit. But sometimes I just have to let a new project sink in for a day and when I wake up in the morning I am better prepared to tackle it.

Set a deadline for yourself. Most people do their best work under some pressure. Also, give yourself a reward, "If I get X% done then I can do/have Z."

Perhaps you need to do something differant. Find a small project that you keep saying, "I'll get to that someday" and do it. Just make sure it is small and doesn't become the focus of the rest of your day/week. Sometimes it is easier to go back to the original project then.

Clean your desk. If your desk is cluttered it can be hard to focus on the task at hand. It also provides space for your new project to spread out on.

Remind yourself you could be in a factory that is 20F hotter then it is outside. Most people in that factory would consider themselves lucky to be in your air conditioned office. If you don't get to work you are liable to join them.

No, Paxx kicking me isn't going to help!

I have been wandering the office quite a bit today. I seem to be able to only work in about 10-15 minutes at a time. But I did manage to make some progress.
I was able to design most of my process flow. Usually getting up and taking a small break outside is usually enough to re-engergize me but today was more difficult that usual. Hopefully tomorrow I will be ready to go.

note to self: remember to wear shinpads

Music often helps.

Or taking an exercise break. Going for a walk, run, or taking a fitness class.

Personally, I need to do some form of exercise over my lunch hour (usually I either take or teach a group fitness class at our corporate fitness facility) in order to keep me motivated and energized through the afternoon. If I can't make a lunch-hour workout, due to meetings or other commitments, I can really feel it come 1500 - I just don't have any energy or motivation to get me through the rest of the afternoon!

I listen to music. It seems to take my mind off of my problems and gives me a fresh start.

I have to go with Griffinme except instead of setting a deadline...force a deadline. Take my example..er..for example: Right now I'm laying patio stones in my backyard for a hot tub. To make sure I get it done and don't leave it half-finished I've arranged delivery of the hot tub for Thursday morning.

I've got 5 tiles left to do and then a whole bunch o' dirt in the middle but I'm done for tonight. I'll do the rest tomorrow after work.

If any of you want to see pics of the patio thus far, go visit my website http://www.robbierobb.com and click on the photo gallery. If you scroll down through the blog on the front page you'll also see how I came to be in the position to be getting a hot tub (gotta love radio stations )

I don't work, I just pretend to do so.

My usual approach on things I don't find very interesting is to plan. Self-discipline is key. It usually goes like this:

1. Set a deadline: "I need to have this done in three weeks"
2. Calculate the time you need and multiply that by two: "I can do this in one week, so I need two"
3. Goof around until you run out of time: "Damnit, only one week left! Rush rush!!"

Other than that, essential bits for me are daylight, time-management and background noise. I need to be able to stare out of the window and my ears have to be kept busy. And seeing I am nightbreed I work best in the evening hours.

Now how come they stick me in a room with no window and a pc with no speakers and a guy who prefers to have the tl-lights on from 9 to bloody 6 all the damn time. Grrr... Messes up my biorhythm.

Oh yeah, and this internet connection is highly distracting.

Actually...I just look at all the new stuff being uploaded....like OTS LS themes....and think "can't beat 'em....better join 'em"...and then spend half a lifetime updating themes....

Motivation?

It's hard to come by, but I usually just close my eyes, sent myself back to the time I've found myself enjoying life the most, and just let myself flow. Once you're ready to tackle it, your brain will let you know, and you'll focus

You can 'say' it...just don't start giving demonstrations....
