RightClick'ing again.

RightClick'ing again.

Well, not really 'sneak previews', just showing off what I'm tinckering with.

You might know some of'em. ;)
And more in the workings... These are just the result of some 4 hours of work.

I've set up an extra PC running Windows XP, purely for skinning RightClick again. That's dedication, ay? (Shakes fist at Stardock)
I might even take up skinning WB again (XP only) IF I can get hold of an older version of SKS, v5 perhaps.
The one on the old SDC (SKS 6) just won't play nice.

My search for that file brought me to here

Snow...recently I had a system that couldn't use the converter for works docs into word/office docs.... the attempt kept on bombing out to 'you need a newer converter'....which was bogus.....

What ended up being needed was a DL from MS with the name 'vcredist_x86.exe' ....yep, one of them...
End of Jafo's quote

And just like Paul says this should be the file you need :jafo:

elvee crosses fingers for Snowy.

I've downloaded and installed 3 or 4 different 'versions' of files with that name. ;-)

Those three are on the list of todays downloaded/installed files.
'vcredist_IA6' freaked out and wouldn't install.

Ah...ok. Maybe it is something else I have, but I have no idea on where to start. Any suggestions?

No clue.
What. So. Ever.

Just a thought...would you by chance have Keyboard Launchpad installed?

Just thinking about the Hot key. I have it installed but I am not actively using it.

No, I didn't have Keyboard Launchpad installed, so I gave it a go and installed it.
I don't know if that was what tipped the balance, but now I can activate the RightClick menu just like I did on Vista; double right click.

Go figure..... 8|

Bitter sweet "victory" though.

1) The skin editor crashes instantly when I launch it. Not the biggest issue though since I've got the XP box going with RightClick working 100%.

2) This may be hard to comprehend and even harder to explain why it's happening:
A lot of applications launched from the RightClick menu doesn't work properly.
Examples:
- Winamp. When launched from RightClick I cannot do -anything- from the application. Start music, load files etc etc.
Loading it "normally" - no problems.

- Microsoft Excel.

- VLC Media player. Just plain doesn't load from RightClick.

- Any webbrowser, Chrome, FireFox, Pale Moon, IE. From RightClick they all load as it was the first time they were started.

I'm absolutely baffled why this happens.

That's odd...I will have to try this out when I get home. I never actually used RC for launching programs. I use it for the meters and systray(which is not working for me at the moment)

a reboot or logoff perhaps? or something else that got the c++ runtimes loaded.

it looks like a wpf issue, as office does not have transparency.

can you post the config of the menu? (the file where the menu entries are stored.)

in the meantime try configuring a menu entry not to the executable, but to the desktop link.

Rebooting had no effect, but the double right click is no issue. It's better than crashing Explorer. ;)

All applications are installed on the C-drive.
All shortcuts used in RightClick are stored on the D-drive. (For easier setting up on new systems)

It doesn't matter if RightClick link to the .exe files or to any shortcut anywhere, even newly created shortcut. (Have tested this thoroughly.)

It's just weird why the applications would 'malfunction' just because they are launched by/from RightClick.....
That's what's really bugging me.

i didn't mean a screenshot of the gui but the actual config file. that gui might create some bullshit which eventually could be fixed manually.

Oh...

Silly me. I wasn't 100% sure what you ment. ;)

Typical skin config: [link]
Main config file: [link]

the config file isn't the problem though.
End of moshi's quote

No, I didn't think so either. It's merely defining the items in the menu. ;)

Quoting moshi, reply 62
do you still run RightClick in some compatibility mode? tried turning this off?
End of moshi's quote

Now, this is where things start to get even stranger....

I had reinstalled RightClick after having littered the system with a load of C++ runtimes and various dotNETs, and somehow it had set itself in Windows 95 compatibility mode.
I removed the compatibility mode, rebooted, and now it's back to crashing explorer again even if I re-set the compatibility mode to Windows 95.

I give up... ;)

Okay, back to NextStart for me then. ;-)

or LiteStep running as a service with jDesk as the only module (though then you could use xPopup as a second module, which is far better than RightClick).
End of moshi's quote

already do this ;)

i got this running.

1. you need all MS Visual C++ 32-bit libraries installed

2. run Omar's old LiteStep installer: http://www.crystalxp.net/galerie/en.id.419-litestep-omar-hussain-explorer-tools.htm

do not set LiteStep as shell during the install!!!

3. do not run LiteStep now!!!

4. get the latest LS 0.25 alpha core build: http://www.lsdev.org/doku.php?id=lsdev:downloads

and unzip and overwrite the core files in the directory you installed LS

5. get the latest 32-bit versions of jDesk (0.75), xpaintclass (1.0), xstatsclass (1.1.5) and xpopup (2.1): http://www.shellfront.org/modules/

and unzip them in the modules directory

6. write LSNoShellWarning true  in LiteStep\step.rc

7. create a new directory in LiteStep\profiles\YourName\themes. lets call it YourTheme

8. in this new dirextory create a text file called theme.rc

9. write your theme in this file. for example:

OTSMajorVersion 2
OTSMinorVersion 0

ConfigDir "$ThemeDir$config\"
LSImageFolder "$ThemeDir$images\"

include "$ConfigDir$jdesk.rc"
include "$ConfigDir$popup.rc"

*NetLoadModule xpaintclass-1.0
*NetLoadModule xstatsclass-1.1.5
*NetLoadModule xpopup-2.1
*NetLoadModule jdesk-0.75

10. set this new theme by writing  ThemeDir "$ThemesDir$YourTheme\" in LiteStep\profiles\YourName\themes\themeselect.rc

11. comment the hotkeys that conflict with the explorer shell in LiteStep\profiles\YourName\personal\hotkey.rc

      should look like this:

;*Hotkey WIN R !Run
;*Hotkey WIN E "$FileManager$"
;*Hotkey WIN PAUSE control.exe sysdm.cpl
;*Hotkey WIN M !MinimizeWindows
;*Hotkey WIN+SHIFT M !RestoreWindows

12. you can now run LiteStep. right clicking on the desktop will get you a popup menu. it will be pretty ugly and just text without images. have a look at the xpopup documentation. if it was not included in the latest module you downloaded from shellfront, i recommend to find the docs in one of the older builds.

13. to apply new settings press CTRL+ALT+R on the keyboard.

have to add that i do not use this very often.

back in the XP days i structured my start menu. one folder for graphics, one for the internet, etc.

but the built-in search in 7s start menu is very convenient. so the only thing i really use this is to run some macros that i use maybe once a week.

It looks like LS isn't too happy about cooperating with DisplayFusion.
The extended taskbars keeps either flickering or totally disappears when LS is launched - so I killed it again.

Guess it needs a bit more work. ;)

But I got the rightclick menu going, though.

i do not have multiple monitors, but setting up jDesk for multiple monitors might help:

docs are in version 0.711 (available at shellfront)

something like this in theme.rc (for full screen, you probably want to adjust, else a maximized window will overlap your bars)

MonitorNames mon1 mon2 mon3

*jDeskWorkArea mon1 "0,0,0,0"

*jDeskWorkArea mon2 "0,0,0,0"

 *jDeskWorkArea mon3 "0,0,0,0"

Accepts negative and positive decimal values, which combined create the WorkArea "box". Opposite sides must have a difference greater than 200. The order of values are:

"<left>,<top>,<right>,<bottom>"

else xDesk might be an alternative (also at shellfront)(use 32bit version even on Win64)

That didn't make any difference. :(

Just in case it's me effin something up in the rc (which isn't unlikely), here's the containt of theme.rc

OTSMajorVersion 2
OTSMinorVersion 0

ConfigDir "$ThemeDir$config\"
LSImageFolder "$ThemeDir$images\"

include "$ConfigDir$jdesk.rc"
include "$ConfigDir$popup.rc"

*NetLoadModule xpaintclass-1.0
*NetLoadModule xstatsclass-1.1.5
*NetLoadModule xpopup-2.1
*NetLoadModule jdesk-0.75

MonitorNames mon1 mon2 mon3

*jDeskWorkArea mon1 "0,0,0,0"
*jDeskWorkArea mon2 "0,0,0,0"
*jDeskWorkArea mon3 "0,0,0,0"

End of quote

The rightclick menu does work - needs some heavy modifications - but it works.
