Slow Site

Does anyone else have a hard time connecting to this site? This seems to be the only site that takes a while to load view. Just the main page takes a while. I have a cable modem and avg around 300k and dont have any problems with image ladened sites...Flash etc...But this site seems slow and seems to hang up alot. Just me? Or other users noticing the same thing?

I'm on a 56k...and I'm used to Graphics sites being 'slow'.....I just age quietly while I wait...

I'm also on a 56k and sometimes it takes close to 5 minutes for a page to load. But I know a couple of people on 56k with no problems at all. I think I've heard similar stories with cable and DSL connections too.

This site sites loads a lot faster with Opera, than IE for me..............but with other sites, they're about the same.

'speech', Crazygirl....Spell checker

As with Koasati, I've found Opera to be faster....[its 'claim-to-fame' was that it could load Netscape's site faster than Netscape could]...

Yeah, Jafo......it claims to be faster, but this is the only site where it actually seems to be.

ssshhh don't tell anybody but i'm on cable most time it fast loading but there are some days this site does load slow mayby it depends on the amount of traffic on any given day.

Just a quick suggestion. Try going to "Edit Account" at the top of the page. Select "optimize Account for Speed."
That might help a little.

Indeed the site is slow. But since I'm on DSL (work) and cable (home), it's not so much the laoding that's slow, it's the server to respond.
It like: nothing... nothing... nothing... (5 seconds pass)... nothing... WHAM! the page is there.

But it's not constant. Sometimes it's fast, sometimes it's slow. I think the site is probably victim of its popularity again.

/me has a theory to explain this

the site is deliberatly slow, so that the skinners get board waiting for it to load, and have time to create more skins

I like feline's thinking!

Yes, at times the site does appear to get slower. We believe that this is in part relative to how many users are on the site.

I'm in the process of going through all of WinCustomize's code to look for ways to improve performance. I believe I have found several little things that can be done which will help. And hopefully with all of them combined it will make a noticeable difference.

So over the next couple of weeks my primary goal is to optimize the code. I will probably roll over all the changes at once so dont expect anything just yet.

/me looks round nervously.....the Janitor is going to play with things again....gets ready to pick up the broken bits....

Janitor T-Man: please refer to my separate thread "Banner-ad problems?". Sorry if it should have been included in this thread...

Slow....

I'm sosososososososososososo sorry. I'll stop trying to steal the little bandwidth on the server for a bit of self amusement

I'd like to see banner ads removed for now anyway, they don't generate any real revenue and they just bulk up the site.

I wonder if everyone knows you can go into your profile (Edit Account) and optimize a few things there. Under "performance settings" you can turn off the icons for all the listings that use them, select the "speed" setting and restrict the number of skins or news/message board posts that display per page. You can also uncheck any apps that you aren't interested in so your browser doesn't have to load their listings and limit the skins displayed per section with a rating qualifier.

Overall I think this site is remarkably well designed for speed and does a great job most of the time. I notice a bit of sluggishness at times and just figure it's the load of visitors or the janitor is mopping the code out again...

Hmmm, I think the site will run faster if all of Jafo's and DavidK's blabberings were eliminated. That's it, why didn't I think of it before:

if user='Jafo' or user='DavidK' then
ZapKeyboard
else
DisplayMessage
end if
