Peer Rating?

Can someone please explain peer ratings.
Thanx!

Peer rating is how good people think your work is. IIRC, they can only be given by people who are "special" in some way - usually because they're recognised skinners themselves. They're not always entirely accurate, but generally if your skin has 8 or more it's a good sign, whereas if it's 3 or less, it's bad (particularly since users don't see low-rated skins). If it's 1 you probably ripped your submission from someone else.

TheGreenReaper is talking in theory, but it is not always like this

Yes, TGR is right in theory, in practice peer ratings don't meen much because not a lot of people actually rate any skin. There are a few "10" rated skins that I think don't deserve a perfection score, just like I've seen a few "6" rated skins that deserve more than just a passing grade.
On the other hand, I believe that poor rated skins are usually acurate, because when somebody bothers to rate something 1, 2 or 3, it's because they REALLY think a skin is very crappy.

Personnaly I rarely or never grade, and when I do it's usually to give a 9 or a 10 on a skin that I feel has an unfair rating so far.

When I'm not sure what rating a skin deserves I head to this page

Hehehe! Cool Bill. Didn't know anybody actually used it.

I read that a long time ago too paxx, and think about it everytime I rate a skin.

I generally only rate things that are right on the edge or being displayed or hidden. When I see mediocre things that at least deserve some exposure, I'll make sure they're getting a 3 or more. The same idea goes the opposite way for crap and rips. I don't see much point in reinforcing a high rating, a user will usually make his or her own opinion before taking a rating into account.

Personally, I place little to no credence in the ratings. My main complaint is the "initial rating" that I feel is placed there rather arbitrarily by the wizops. How well are these things being judged if they're rated as they're posted?

Case in point: My "Blue Sunset" skin for Dashboard was given a 2. Granted, not my best work, but it's not THAT bad. Just compared with the ratings on some of my other skins, that 2 (arguably) makes no sense.

I do, however, like that rating program, paxx -- nice work. I'd give it at least a 7

Oh, and one other thing ... the recent Dashboard submission "My XP," which is just pieces blatantly ripped from three other skins with a new (and rather plain) wallpaper, was given a 4 when it was posted. The name isn't even original (there was already a "MyXP"). So how "accurately" are these really being rated?

You took the words from my mouth Paxx

I know well, that this Peer Rating System has been done with a lot of try to be as fair as possible and in theory it is.
But, (there is always a but ), what kind of Peer Rating is this, with 1 or 2 votes only?
We must have a peer rating system with at least 5 votes, otherwise it is better to not appearing at all, 'till it gets at least 5 votes.

By the way, I know that we are living in a cruel word, but the artists are very sensitive people and we must try not to hurt them, if you know what I mean. We are artists too, and we must not do to the others, what we don't like them to do to us

I would like to see explanations from the rating person as to why the particular rating. I think this would give the artist a basis of knowing what to improve on (how do you get better otherwise?). Any thoughts anyone (or is it just opening a can of worms)?

adni18 - but the artists are very sensitive people and we must try not to hurt them

true
personally i only rate things that i like. the reasoning is that if i dont like it, or am not impressed, this is hardly a reflection on the work, only on my perception of the work.

however, if something really speaks to me, and moves me emotionally, then it really does deserve a proper rating, and i will look to do so.

starone - I would like to see explanations from the rating person as to why the particular rating.

nothing like asking for everything

these days i only tend to download things that really speak to me emotionally, and that i like. however, this it is hard to know how to put this sort of reaction into words

Um, how about "this skin really spoke to me emotionally, and I liked it." Those are words, right?

Just a thought

OK....so tell me why I can't see these ratings.....
I had heard of them, but didn't think much of it since I couldn't see them, then my latest NS theme was featured yesterday (I was shocked), and I see this Peer Rating.....
Why can't I see the rating on any of the skins? Is it because I'm a lowly citizen? I would really like to see what the "special" people think of my work.
And another thing....how many of you rate the SS, before you even check out the skin? How many rate skins of apps you don't even use?

Koasati, citizens can't view the ratings, apparently since some people (me among them) were criticizing them when they were introduced. One of my argument was that the casual downloaders were going to be influenced by the opinions of other in their downloads. Casual downloaders being citizens and guests, it was apparently decided that they should not be influenced by the ratings for their downloads. I personnaly would have prefered to have the rating system removed altogether, but whatever. y other beef was that it is impossible to grade a piece of art. What are the criterias that distinguish a good skins from a bad one. It's then that I made my evaluation grid (see link above) in order to give me and other who wish to use it a more educated basis on which to rate.
I eventually abandonned my cruisade since I came to the conclusion that ratings don't mean anything since nobody uses them anyway; it's almost as if they don't exist anyway.

The citizen class is not meant for skinners, I am sure that yo are only a citizen still because you just arrived. I have no doubt you will be "promoted" soon.
