If you have the registered version, it may be possible to do this just by selecting silver in the colour tint box (next to the subskin selector).

If not, just open up the start button (probably called xpstart.bmp or start.bmp) in any graphics editor and change the colour to silver with something like the Colourize command in PSP.

Well, just look at the skin then. Open the skin's .xp file (or .UIS file if there is no .xp file) and look for [Taskbar.StartButton] - the Image attribute will have the filename of the start button image.

i take it you are actually using windowblinds, as the others are assuming? or are you perhaps just using windows xp and want to change your start button colour? please explain exactly what you're trying to do here.

I need more info. Is it a start button in a skin, or the regular start button in XP? Or is it the classic Start button? Please give more information.

Well, anyway, IF it's a skin, just find the bitmap that goes with the start button and change the color. If you start havethe normal start button, you'll need WindowBlinds or something like that.

And if it's regular XP, right click on the desktop, select the tab with the window style on it and change the drop-down box to silver. But then everything goes silver!!! I prefer the blue and green myself.
