XP glare problem

So, I finally bit the bullet and bought XP. The problem is, I've already been forced to revert back to Win98 because of one problem: The white areas of the screen give off an incredibly bright glare that gives me a headache after a few seconds. If I open yahoo.com, forget about it. My video drivers are up to date, and I have a fairly decent monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 550v, 15 inches). The only way to counter the glare is to reduce the contrast of the monitor, which makes my display look dull as hell. Any ideas on what can I do to correct this problem?

I just bought an HP with XP installed on it and in the Display properties go to settings and click advanced and click color correction and turn down the gamma setting. This might work.

I have my contrast and brightness settings down a bit by default....even though, I have to squint when I'm at skinz.org....they cleverly used a white that was 255,255,255 and it just plain hurt. It's since been wound back a bit to about 240,240,240 I think, but it's still tedious to look at for any real length of time.

Just one of the reasons I'll never 'like' white/bright wallpapers, and probably why my stuff is mostly 'dull grey'...

Have you tried drivers from your monitor manufacturer?
