So what exactly is a rip? I'm getting into how to create my own skins and what is the threshold? Can you use someone elses graphics, modify them and then include in the readme credit for the original? Or is that taboo? Where do you draw the line?

Working in Architecture as I have been for 30 years, the prospect of theft of copyright of designs/drawings is very real. Compensation for the potential for financial loss can and has been upheld in court....the 'ripper' being forced to pay 'loss of profits' to the original company....in one case that I recall, that was $60,000 plus costs.
If and when copyright proprietorship is pursued in court it's the 'ripper' that gets hurt, well and good...
