Hiding Domain Username in Windows XP start panel

Quit a while back, someone helped me with a registry edit to hide the display of the username by Windows XP in the Start Panel. I believe someone supplied me with a link to a Microsoft Knowledge Base artice that showed the registry edit.

The reason I need to do this is that our domain entries display our username with the last name, first name format. I have edited the start panel in my current skin with Photoshop and put my name in the way that I would like for it to display, but Windows insists on putting the Domain entry in the start panel too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have searched the Microsoft site extensively and cannot find the article. I know this has come up many times before on this dicussion board in the past.

Thanks,

Citizen Hoppe

The information that is displayed in the user area of the start menu in XP is the "Full Name" property of the user account in the domain. There's no way that I could find to disable the displaying of the user info when a member/user of an AD/NT domain.

You could always use Object Bar.

Thanks for the reply Orion. I know that there is a registry edit to keep windows from displaying the name on the start panel. I did it on my former computer. When I upgraded that part was gone. I installed my old hard drive in my new computer and I guess I could seach the registry to find the edit but I got the link to the Microsoft Knowlege Base article from someone in this forum. I was just trying to same some time and work.

Thanks anyway!

Registry Settings
User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer]
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer]
Value Name: NoUserNameInStartMenu
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = display username, 1 = hide username)

The operative part of my post is....when a member/user of an AD/NT domain. If a group policy is being shoved down your system's throat and this property falls under that group policy, you may be able to change the value, but it may not have any effect.

Thanks! I really appreciate it. Since it worked the last time, it will probably work this time. Thanks again for all your help!
