SDC 1.3 : another problem...

Well...
When you set up this new version of SDC, the "Skins and Themes" section started to mess up !
Impossible to get a fresh "updated skins" list. The thumbnail panel is absolutely useless as it looks now. Takes ages to show this one skin I want to see... when it shows anything at all.
Very often shows 30-40 times the same skin in a section.
Tried to install every single update, but it's always the same. Boy, why the heck did you change it...? It was working very fine before !!

Sorry if I read a bit negative, but I'm as much disappointed as I was happy before.

Thats why its currently in beta release as its not perfect yet.

Try uninstalling your current version, and remove everything from the \wcbrowser directory, then reinstalling the latest version from Stardock Central.

There is an option to set it to the classic view instead of all the mini-previews

Also clear out your internet temp files and it will update correctly

Well, it doesn't matter if I've set to classic or previews or thumbnails or whatever. This version has got me totally frustrated, and angry. I cannot view anything anymore. I reinstalled SDC, it worked for a few minutes, then blanked out again. AND AGAIN! I've emptied my temp folder. Nada. This beta release really sucks, and I'm looking forward to the update/patch/fix/new/whatever. This release is definintely a "thumbs down". >

dabe - what version of SDC are you using...?

Gary, I'm using V. 1.30.256 Build 42
I get absolutely no library updates at all anymore. In place of any thumbnails is the default image - a rectangular gray somethin' or other. I've also had times when a single skin would show up 30-40 times in a single listing. Right now, instead of anything in my library list is a 6 digit number (don't remember). I really miss the old SDC alot.

That's the correct one...let's get rid of it completly and it will work fine. Un-install it and then Delete C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral folder. Re-boot and download and install this https://www.stardock.com/sdnet_login.asp . Now try it..

Gary, I'm back in business. Let's just hope it stays this way. Thanks. Interesting thing, though, which may have caused my problems. I dunno. I had two SDCentral folders, the second one with a (2) after it. I don't know where that came from. I d both of them after uninstalling SDC.

Again, muchas gracias, amigo.

My "thumbs down" just did a 180.

To me that "classic" view isn't so classic. Now when clicking on a skin it doesn't show up anywhere. Before you could click on the listing and it would show that skin to the right. Now in order to view the skin in classic mode you have to click view/add comments AFTER clicking the skin. Or have to click large preview button.
Certainly for hi speed users the changes are much appreciated. However for us lowly dialup users it is more frustrating.
The thumbnails section also doesn't provide a date showing so hard to tell if there is anything new sometimes, aside from the image not showing up right away.

And, back. >

Oh, Yrag......
Ever since we got this major update, SDC has been nothing but problems. I fix them, with your help, things are good for a while, then for reasons certainly unbeknownst to me, SDC gets mucked up again.

This time, I cannot see any previews. Not large, not thumbnails, nada. I haven't tried downloading sans a preview yet, getting the image instead from the WC Browser, but I shouldn't have to, fer cryin' out loud. This should work. Am I gonna have to uninstall and reinstall, AGAIN? For the 4th time? I would love to figure out exactly what is causing my SDC to keep crashing, rather than just fixing it every time it does. Your thoughts?

Dabe (a tad frustrated)

Dabe - here's the 'glitch' in SDC Libraries....they run off the WC Browser Skins Data and if they are up to date, so is SDC...Do Not Update skins in SDC. As soon as you do that it wacks SDC. This http://storage.stardock.com/files/stardockcentral130.exe is the build # you want. Do not update further then this build until this is fixed. All your skins will be updated by opening WC Browser and clicking on 'Skins and Themes'...you need to give it a minute or so to auto update, but it will. There is no prompt or anything to tell you that's what it's doing (will be soon), but it works. Once it does that, both SDC and WC 'Skin and Themes' should be the same.

All the other 'Options' in SDC 'Skins and Themes' work, so you can change any to your liking, just 'Do Not Update Skins' there........

So, maybe that option to update skins in SDC should be totally disabled? Maybe? From what you're saying, I'm sure that's what I did. And, from what I'm gathering from what you're saying, I'll have to do the uninstall/reinstall routine all over again. But, this time I will not attempt to update skins through SDC, although, I'm not even sure what that means.

Your understanding of what/what not to do is correct...

Well Gary, my understanding may be all well and good, but it really didn't help. I now have previews, mostly, but the libraries are screwed up. If I try to view CursorXP, for instance, I'll see a few Cursor XP skins, but mostly ObjectBar skins. Almost all the libraries are almost all filled with the same OB skins. I dunno. -sigh-

Did you Delete the C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral before you installed? Also, did you update WC Browser with the update that came out today?
Yes, I did the SDCentral folder, rebooted, then installed SDCentral again. But, where is there notice to update the WC Browser? I've looked all over, and I don't see it. As a matter of fact, my browser states that I have Version 1.29(b).002. If I go to the Browser download page, it says only Version 1.20.

OK...let's try this....did about 10 or so updates show up on SDC for you today?

...oh yeah, one more thing....did you install WC Browser from a download or thru SDC?

Here ya go Diane...I made a few calls...http://storage.stardock.com/files/sdcentral_current.exe
Delete the contents of Program Files\Stardock\Sdcentral\Temp first, as it may contain older caches. Do not Delete the 'Temp' folder itself...just the contents.

Yeah, a bunch of SD program updates showed up, so I updated most of them. But, it never occurred to me to check for a WC browser through SDC. DOH!! All I did was look through the WC website. Anyway, I'll do the rest of the updating, including removing the SD temp files this evening, when I get home from work. It looks like that should really do it. Gary, what would I do without you? You da man!!!

Gary, I've uninstalled, removed, rebooted, reinstalled, uninstalled....reinstalled, at least five times. Each time I do, SDC seems to work OK for a few minutes, then something goes cerfluey (sp). Usually, it's the Skins library, wherein OB seems to invade the other libraries, pushing out the other programs' themes. Kinda like a weed. Once, the discussion groups got screwed up, when there was little distinction between General or Help or Skinning, other than maybe the order of the posts, and the dates of posting.

I'm at a point now where I cannot go to Add/Remove Programs, because the install.log cannot be found. So, I just d the SD Browser folder AGAIN, and reinstalled. I'm sure something is really screwed up in the registry, but I am not capable of messing around with that.

SDC seems to be working OK right now, so I figured I'd fire off this message. Probably, in a few minutes, I will no longer have the opportunity.

Dabe (who is frustrated beyond belief)

Hey Diane... just wrote a very long game plan for this and when I went to submit it, it logged me out ....grrrrr (sometimes, this site just....).

Anyway, the short of it is, I don't think it's a registry problem. Try this ..right click on WC Tray Component (not the SDC Tray Component) and click on Settings/Advanced/Refresh WC Libraries. If that doesn't do the trick, let me know and we'll attack the WC Browser install...I think that's where the problem is...

What and where is the tray component?

Powered by SkinBrowser!
That's what I Thought...

In SDC/Software under the Wincustomize tab you'll see an install for Wincustomize Tray...make sure you have checked 'Show Pre-release Verisons' in lower left corner of SDC. Install and do as noted above. Now see what happens with SDC skins.....

Well, Gary, you sure got me pegged. But, I did have the latest SD tray installed. I just never used it. But, as you instructed, I refreshed the libraries. Nada. The skin libraries are still all screwed up. So, I'm waiting for what you advise on the WC browser install. TIA
