I could guess, but why don't you tell us what you're talking about exactly? Are you trying to convert an image to png? Or is it something else?

My PNG looks fine when I import it. I then tell it to make the background transparent, and it is not smooth at all, very rough around the computer screen and shadow below it.

when you save as a png don't save it with a solid background save it with a transparent one (png supports transparency). then when you import it it should look right.

Here's the whole problem:

I want to change icons on my desktop for a new skin. I created the icon in photoshop and saved it as a png with a transparent background. Then I imported that png file into IconDeveloper but that program keeps making the background solid. I even tried the "hot pink" method but then I get a pink hue around the icon that I do not want. Can anyone share in their experiences of making nice crisp clean transparent icons?

I have never had that problem. You just make the icon in ps, psp, or gimp, or whatever. Make it look like you want, including transparency and all. then I save it because I like to keep the png file. Then I right click on it and choose to make an icon out of it using icon developer. It gives you options on what to do and how to make it. What is most likely happening is that you don't have the settings correct when you save it after you import it, or your os doesn't support the alphachannel...Make sure that you are using XP and that you are saving the icons in true color with alpha (the xp icon option).

ok, I got the icon in and transparent, thank you. Is there a trick to making the icons crisp and smooth? Mine come out very jagged. Even when I open a system icon and resave it through IconDeveloper they still come out jagged.

you need to play around with icon developer.

I think your problem may be IconDeveloper. I've been playing around with it to
see what might be causing you these problems, and I can't save a working ico at
all. Open the same png file with IconWorkshop, save as ico, and it works great. I then checked
the newsgroup, and found that IconDeveloper is giving at least a few people this
same trouble.
What version are you using?
