New player - what version do I play?

Hello,

I own the trilogy.  And I want to play the way that makes the most sense.  Is there any benefit to playing the original Sins and then playing Entrenchment and Diplomacy?  Or should I just jump right into Diplomacy? Since there isn't really a campaign/storyline, my guess is I should just skip to the end?

Thanks

Yeah, you can jump straight into Diplomacy.  It has all the content.

Just make sure to disable the pirates; they're quite nasty and completely unmanageable when you're first learning the game.

Some also suggest doing Original first as it will teach you all the mechanics. Entrenchment and Diplomacy add more stuff to think about and consider.

Its arguably easier to learn from the original (forces you to learn fleet management), then once you get comfortable with that learn what's new with Entrenchment and then Diplomacy. But its probably not that big of a difference.

Thanks all.  I'll probably just run the tutorial then go with Diplomacy no pirates and easy till I get a couple games under my belt. What a great game.  Glad to see they are releasing another.

Vanilla, Entrenchment, and Diplomacy really aren't that different. The main thing is, vanilla is all about fleets, Entrenchment adds as the name suggests more defenses and ways to counter them, including starbases, anti-structure cruisers, mines, improved defense platforms, and defense research trees to support the defenses, and Diplomacy on top of Entrenchment adds changes to the diplomacy system like envoy cruisers and diplomacy research trees to support the diplomacy system, and enhanced pirates (currently overpowered, but the problem is being worked on).

I'm in the "start with the Original, then work your way up to Entrenchment, then Diplomacy" camp.  With the expansions there is so much to learn and this game has a learning curve.  In regular Sins the focus is on fleet-to-fleet combat which is the backbone of this game and an essential thing to learn.  Entrenchment adds another layer of strategic complexity with the starbases.  Diplomacy may add a little more to the single player game but for the most part it seems to play out like Entrenchment.

So, I say work your way up through them.  Play each race.  You want to be familiar with each race's strengths and weaknesses relative to the other races and you want to know their tech trees.  Once you feel really good about the game and can beat Unfair AIs, then it might be time to take the training wheels off and log onto Ironclad Online for some people v. people multiplayer, which is where this game really shines.

Ultimately, do what you find is fun. Always remember that and you'll be all set!
