Midwest, Plains brace for massive winter storm

CHICAGO – The nation's midsection braced for a massive winter storm Monday that forecasters said will bring heavy snow and ice to much of the Plains and Midwest as the week progresses.

The National Weather Service forecast freezing rain and snow across the region Monday, heralding the start of a storm system that is expected to bring heavy snowfall Tuesday and Wednesday, paralyzing parts of the region. The storm was expected to march from the Rockies through much of the Plains and Midwest before making its way to the East Coast.

Early Monday, freezing drizzle made roads slick in northwest Missouri, causing cars to slide off highways in Buchanan County and prompting authorities to cancel classes at public and private schools in the area. Freezing rain and fog led to some flight delays Sunday at the airport in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Chicago and Milwaukee were expected to be particularly hard-hit. The weather service issued a blizzard watch for Tuesday and Wednesday for southern Wisconsin, northern Illinois and northwest Indiana that included those cities. Forecasters said snowfall totals could reach up to 2 feet in some areas by the time the storm system has moved through the region.

The weather service said the heavy snowfall combined with high winds could create whiteout conditions, particularly on Tuesday night into Wednesday, making driving extremely dangerous in some areas. Snow drifts of 5 feet to 10 feet are possible. The service said winds on Tuesday could reach up to 60 mph in open areas and near Lake Michigan.

Once the storm has moved through, bitterly cold temperatures are expected to grip much of the region. The weather service said wind chills as cold as 40 degrees below zero could hit parts of North Dakota and South Dakota.

Last Wednesday an overnight snowstorm hit us with 18 inches. Overnight! New York broke another record with three feet of snow from the same storm. Talk about WTF!!

Snow!  Yuk!  Want to hear a good one?  Winter of 1982, Northern Maine, almost 50 inches of snow, overnight!  Woke up in the morning and all I could see of my car was the tip of the antenna.  8C They made a commemorative T-Shirt that year that said "I Survived 221 Inches of Snow", the total snowfall that winter.

I sure would love to live in Hawaii! :w00t:

Oh, and I am in the track of this storm too!

Global Warming is real. The jury was out on that long ago. Weather like this is a part of it in that if patterns change enough it could ironically enough cause an ice age..

You don't know how close to the truth that statement is Sharchuk. I hope people realize what is happening because if they don't I feel awful sorry for them.

I agree the climate is changing, as it has done numerous times in the past, About 900 AD until about 1350 AD there was a warming trend that caused ... in 10 years it cooled off again sending Earth into a mini ice age ....

I just contend this is a earth cycle not something man caused nor can man prevent it. It is what it is and mankind is along for the ride, hopefully we survive what ever nature has in store for us.

True, but the next ice age isn't due for some time. There have also been 5 mass extinctions throughout history as well, but right now we're in the 6th one which being cause by us.

That's a fact.  At the same time, it doesn't hurt to do what we can to decrease pollution and our dependence on unsustainable sources of energy.  That's just being good stewards of the earth.

How is that padded room of yours? Don't forget your tinhat to block out those awful mind control rays as well. There is just way too much real world science that shows the climate change is happening.

Eh hem....

From a biologists point of view (me) -

Sulfur dioxide increases cloud cover. Sulfur dioxide comes out of your car and various industrial processes. Cloud cover makes Earth reflective, temperatures drop. Carbon dioxide converts solar radiation to UV rays and traps it in the lower atmosphere, heating the surface. That's a chemical property of carbon dioxide.........not debatable. As for the carbon cycle, CO2 concentration (parts per million) has steadily increased since 1860 (measured in geological fossils), started increasing faster in 1958. It's increased about 300 ppm in the last 150 years. The atmosphere and biosphere are in equilibrium, same with the ocean and the atmosphere. This is called the carbon cycle. Old dead stuff makes it unbalanced, that's where greenhouse gas comes from. Greenhouse gas absorbs energy and radiates it back to the surface. In case you were wondering, old dead stuff would be fossil fuels.

Temperature fluctuates on this planet, it always will. This is why we don't consistently see warmer temperatures. However, since 1800 we can see evidence of ice melting easier and winter months getting shorter. As CO2 levels rise, oceanic chemistry changes (that's usually right about when a mass extinction occurs - and there's been millions of these extinctions - LINK - vertical axis = percentage extinction of genera, horizontal axis = millions of years ago). As ice caps melt -LINK - (don't argue, they've melted several times in the history of this planet), warm water moves along the oceanic conveyor to the north and cold water moves south. This trend leads to an ice age (happened 6 times in history). If present trends continue, Michigan will have the same climate as Florida in about 100 years.

So, logistical analysis - CO2 has chemical properties - more CO2 in atmosphere would warm planet due to it's chemical properties - Burning fossil fuels moves carbon out of geological sinks and into the atmosphere - A warming trend is evident - Temperature increases, air can hold more moisture, weather patterns change - Temperature alters the biomes - in history, biome change always lead to an extinction.

Will the world end soon? No, but everything I mentioned seems to always lead to the same place - extinction. That's why we should START concentrating on changing. We're just accelerating a series of natural cycles which will lead to extreme changes in our environment.

Insulting like calling people "gullible sheep"? Of course all opinions are equal........... There really must be people out there making money off of "global warming" then..... The same as all of those people making money off of evolution and saying the Earth is not flat.....

Same difference when it is you being referred to. Is there a double standard here? We all may have a right to express an opinion, but that still doesn't mean that it is automatically correct. Opinions based on real world facts are more valid than those based solely on belief. i.e. Conspiracy theories are not facts.

With some it is hard to tell when one doesn't agree with the party line........ Calling someone a "Gullible sheep" seems to be acceptable on here, though. A nice "respectable" term. It is perfectly obvious what he felt about respecting the opinions of others. I never told anyone to shut up.

g3mpi3 stated the facts according to real hands on evidence. These facts do not lie as they can be proven. We are, all of us, guilty of adding to the acceleration of global warming which is a natural process. The operative word being acceleration. In short, we're making it happen faster than it normally would have. Lets not allow this to become heated as that will defeat the purpose of this thread. We can hold a lively debate and listen respectfully to everyone's opinion. There is no right nor wrong. Every one has a voice and it should be heard in a respectful manner.

Unless you believe you are one of the 'gullible sheep' no one else called you that.  Starkers reference was to no one in particular as it was a general reference whereas your comments on the 'padded room' 'tin hat' 'mind control rays' were as you quoted his post.

There is no double standard here.
