GalCiv 2 crashing video driver

 

After letting it collect dust for many a year on my shelf, I decided to redirect my disappointment with Civ5 into another outlet - install GC2 finally. I did so, downloaded the update, and...

It just doesn't work right. Game interface will freeze - music playing, but the system is horribly unresponsive until I can end GC2. One time, the cursor disappeared, and never came back. Occasionally, I will get the message that the video driver crashed, and has recovered.

I get this on no other game. Even the cranky Civ5 doesn't crash like that.

Including my debug.err that is likely not going to be too helpful.

Note, I end up having to End Task the game - it doesn't outright quit.

Trying to learn GC2 as it's been years and years since I played the first, but these crashes are keeping me from going anywhere. All help appreciated...
