Create Custom Ship Style button is greyed out for no reason (DA)

The title basicallly says it all. Playing on DA, most recent version (forget the number), I cannot create a custom ship style.

Note: As I like creating mods and designing ships, if I can't use this feature, my enjoyment of the game will be harmed enormously.

Edit: Never mind. It turned out you could only create a new ship style when editing or creating an opponent, not your own race.

As you found, that option is primarily for telling the AI what templates to use. As a human, you're free to design ships as you please during the game without any such constraint.
