Betanews.com is reporting that AOL is closing shop on Nullsoft.  Winamp will continue to exist and be supported but it appears it may no longer be actively developed.

I hate to say it but it's Probably being Renamed to AMP (AOL Media Player) which will be branded as an AOL Product. I posted a screenshot from the Beta at http://www.sapartyboys.com/amp.jpg. The Beta info from AOL says

November 11, 2004 - Greetings testers and welcome to the AOL Media Player (AMP) Beta Test! Listen to music, watch videos, tune in to radio, burn CDs and more from one convenient player! AMP is an application that works outside of the AOL client, and can be used to play audio and video content on your computer when you are not connected to the Internet. Remember to check out known issues, file a bug report for any issues you see and feel free to discuss AMP in the message boards.

For the AMP Beta test, please try the following:

1) Add Media to the Library. Try dragging files, using the menus, etc.

2) Create Audio and Video Playlists.

3) Create Automatic Playlists.

4) Edit metadata for one or multiple items.

5) Search for media.

6) Remove media from the Library.

7) Import a CD.

8) Burn a CD.

I'm gonna stay with iTunes.

I cant say I care much. Ever since the failed Winamp3 it never recovered. Media player 10 from Microsoft is actually a good player (FINALLY, i never liked it before).

All type of software eventually become a commodity.

Why does AOL take everything and run it into the ground? I don't want an AOL media player. I want winamp. Now I have to start searching for a newer, better, free-er media player that isn't owned by corporate asstards.

I wonder if this is a publicity stunt to get long-time freebie users like me to pony up the $15 like I just did for the pro version?

I figure, It's been on my "roundtuit" list for months. Nows a better time than later.

And the picture of the AOL Media Player? Pu-lease! Winamp stays, AMP will never arrive on my PC.

Well, I'll still be using 2.92 until I find something better!

RIP Winamp - long live Winamp.

Quite sad. Been using it for so long I forgot what life BW (before Winamp) was like. Always the only player that was simple, clean, skinnable, and had the options I liked. Doubt I'll find anything better.

Aww, Shoutcast was a fun little server... Does anyone know of an alternative ac3 streaming server?

First, winamp is the best media player ever, especially for slow pcs like mine which still has only *sigh* 64megs of ram and 733 mhz. Second, would this "Amp" only use that visual style in the picture or would it be customizeable? Third, AoL sucks.

That sucks! Out of all the media players I've used and tested. Winamp is one of the best. It's sad to see it die out like this. I still think the setup of the current version will last for a long time and still beat the compitition. The only other player that might come close is Musicmatch.

Still using winamp 5
and will continue to do so there is no need to improve the player from that point
it works .

Aol is not a favorite corpration of mine thats for sure

Never cared for WA3 or 5 anyway....so development is no loss....I'll stick with 2.91.

I shed a bigger tear for kJofol, actually.....

Coincidentally, one of the devs behind 3 was the man behind K-Jofol.

Anyhow, I saw this coming when the main man left last year.

For those who are looking for an excellent alternative to what Winamp is about to become, try QCD.

Brimo beat me to it

If anyone wants to try QCD (aka Quinnessential Player), www.quinnware.com
