WC2K5: Preview next week..

Next week the full site preview will begin to go on-line for WinCustomize subscribers. It'll be in "beta" phase until December so if you want to be one of the first people to see all the new goodies, make sure you're a WinCustomize subscriber (click on the store link above).

It's giong to be a whole new site in terms of features and layouts and speed and the underlying technology. We now have 200 MEGABITS per second to make use of and we're very excited about what's coming we hope you are too!

hope there are more site themes!!!

At first there will only be one site theme. We probably won't have per use skins like we did before so that we can make better use of caching (i.e. make the site much faster).

Bummer about only one site theme. Will it be the same one that is on the user pages?

Good news about the higher speeds though!

froggy: did you ever look at color themes for the page? I recall posting that in the thread some time back. It's kinda the best of both worlds, no ?

It seems rather odd for a site mainly dedicated to skinning will not have the capability to alter its look. I understand the need for speed we all want that. But maybe only restrict dialup to one theme? Easily selectable via profile I should think.
Regardless I am eager to see what the new pages bring us.

ghos:

one has to balance form over function. I'd think color themes would work better for that than the current skinning solution IMHO.

I would have to agree with GhoS and say for a customizing site such as this one would have more options for the look and feel of a website. With todays new computers, even on dial up should be ok with the speed.

The User Page is ok, but lets face it. We love to change things. That is why we are a customizing community.

For example, I'm looking at a Halloween version of Wincustomize right now. Please don't take the customizing away from me.

I know this is off topic but what ever happened to the beta of "right-click" being released?

Great. I hope the site is more opera and firefox friendly.

Hello,

The speed Brad was talking about for the website isn't in terms of download speed. Yes, the site should be faster to download (even to dialup users) but rather the speed referred to here is Web Server Speed, or how fast the server can generate content. Our websites must generate a custom page to many many users per second. Because of the high demand for such content, our servers experience a great deal of slow down. A large portion of the work is done fetching data and displaying that data. The way it is displayed plays a roll in performance. To increase server efficiency, we "cache" pages that have high traffic. Unfortunately, by doing so we limit what can be unique to each visitor, including the themes.

How about a 'recently updated articles' list on the Wincusto main page - I'd like to keep tabs on who has just updated their site! Just the last ten or twenty?

Dark-Star: have you considered a color schemed approach to theming the page rather than the current image based theming? Less bandwith , faster pages, and still customizable , no?

Hey TheD2JBugs. Actually, the new WinCustomize will be able to change in color scheme at the moment. However, this isn't customizable by the user. The site will be able to change in color, however due to changes in HTML (which effect page caching) going from one theme to the next isn't possible with out reducing the speed of the site. So at the moment, WC2K5 will be limited in its ability to change dramatically until we put more focus on this aspect of development. At this point, getting a functional website out to the masses is our primary goal. But not to worry, I'm sure this concept will be revisited.
