Any way to rip DVD movies into my hard drive?

I don't want to "pirate" any movies, but would like to rip DVD's that I bought into my computer so I can put them on my iPod.

Are there ways to rip copy protected DVD's with many chapters/episodes etc?

Which software allows me to do it? Is it legal?

I don't know about the legality of it in your area, but I understand in some countries it is permissible to back up DVD's you have purchased. to HDD or recordable DVD.  In the past I used either DVD Shrink or DVD FAB to accomplish this.  Both allow you to back up the full disc or just the main movie content if desired.

Geez, I haven't bought a new DVD in ages.  Last one was 'Entrapment' with Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones.  Wow, that seems like a millennium ago... but then, I'm more of a music kind of person.

I use DVD Fab ( http://www.dvdfab.com/?aid=2393&vid=avangate ) and have found it to be the best of the ones I have tried.

I think you will get a pretty broad range of opinions on what is legal, and where that might be. In Canada, we pay an extra tax on blank media, such as cassette tapes, DVD and CD and that tax is intended to compensate artists for what is presumed to be the use of the blank media to copy material which is covered by a copyright. My understanding of the law in Canada (or at least its application by the Courts) is that because we pay that tax, we can make a copy of a legitimately purchased copyrighted item, such as music or movie, and for our own personal use (EG: a backup copy).

However, I am not sure Sony, Viacom etc. would share that view; nor am I a copyright lawyer. I doubt you could even get a group of copyright lawyers to agree on what is legal, otherwise there would not be 2 sides to all the copyright trials which go on.

There are many progs you can't go wrong with dvdfab hd decrypter which scrofulous has suggested is good up to a point,it's free to rip,the rest of the functions are free for i think 30 days,Anydvd along with clonedvd & clonecd from slysoft never miss a beat, then we have nero recode tho it can't rip copy protections it is an excellant app to have in your arsenal,ok as for free programs well dvd fab as stated, dvd shrink which is the pre cursor to nero recode before nero got the developer to work for them hence no more updated versions of shrink however it still works great, then there's ratdvd etc etc

ps:

i bought fab as well as the slysoft products & nero came with the new drive however there are free programs that can do the same if money is an issue so before parting with folding stuff check around.

head over to afterdawn.com,read the guides if you have any questions make sure to search the forum before doing so as most questions have already been answered

DVD Shrink and DVD Rip work great.  Whatever one won't rip, the other will.  Both free.

I recommend you a DVD Ripper.

It could easily rip DVD to MP4, H.264, AVI, MP3, WMV, WMA, FLV, MKV, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, 3GP, 3GPP, VOB, DivX, Mov, RM, RMVB, M4A, AAC, WAV, etc. with super fast DVD ripping speed and excellent image and sound quality.

It also can edit the DVD movies, such as trim a video clip, crop the movie, merge several titles or chapters into one file and so on.
