Dopus vs. PDPro

Sounds obscure but people who follow will.....follow...;)

I must like spending [wasting] money.

Since Windows 7 [64bit]....I've still been hanging out for "The Ideal File Manager" [tm] and had long been using Powerdesk and ExplorerPlus.....I blame my using alternate shells way back when for that....as REAL Shell Modders NEVER loaded explorer....as a shell OR as a FM.

I know....I was jumping to conclusions....when PDPro released ver 7 ....I thought....groovy....it'll be FOR 7 - Win7.

It 'might' have been, too...but it fell over frequently on 64bit.

So eventually I bought Dopus....after playing with the Demo for a while.

It had 64bit vers....so was/is 'mostly' stable....now and then it dummy-spits.

Then me gets an email from Avanquest.....PDPro has a version EIGHT!!!! ....that's one more than 7 ....gotta be better.

Me drops the readies....cos now it says '64bit compatible'.....and it karks it when fiddling with zips.

Yep, it still bottles out.

Meanwhile [for you guys with Dopus] there's a new update for that too......

Somehow I think I should just stick with the Aussie proggy....it has some odd quirks....but more functionality than PDPro 8 .....and I think I'll have to wait for 8 to get out of its nappies before it's gonna stay awake for more than 10 minutes....;)

I have been a fan of Dopus since the Amiga days. Although it is starting to feel a bit old, working with a large amount of files is a dream, love how it multitasks.

I bought DOpus too, but I still catch myself heading back to my good ol' Total Commander very, very often. I expected more customization and Themes for DOpus but the ones available are not my taste and the 'skinning' system is limited in my eyes. And that one only works right when using default aero. With WB enabled icons are flat for example.

Yep...a DOpus fan for some time now...pleased with it overall and never saw the need for another...excellent piece of software. Explorer ain't worth a zack. Has it's limitations...Guess the bunyip is still just that.

c242 is right about the skinning part of DOpus, am a shade disappointed by that.

I gave up on Powerdesk after they sold out to Avanquest....they have the worst support I've ever dealt with and the TOS will not allow a Desktop/Laptop install....you'd need to buy a second license.

I own TC and DOpus. I consider both to be excellent programs. Since moving to W7 x64 I only run DOpus x64. I read somewhere that, do to the programming language Ghisler used, TC it will likely never be an x64 program and it's a shame because I find it a bit more customizable than DOpus.

Current release of DOpus is 9.5.4 from June 3, 2010.

^ Well said. My DOpus ... I really couldn't do without it. The flexibility of the views and functionality have served me as well as I could have hoped. True, I'd have liked more 'skinnability', but it was made up for in many other ways.

The main animals [for me] were always PDPro and ExplorerPlus.....and Koop kept me loyal to PDPro because it used DirectSkin {a Stardock software]...so I could use a treetog skin on PDPro while running....a treetog skin in WB.....OK so that was pointless....

Blame Renato.

File manager functionality/compatibility with 64bit, etc is far more critical than with just about anything.

I've had the update of Dopus since earlier today....I'll let you kbow it it goes wobbly.

Note for the wary [ask yrag] if it's an OS....it can be broken....by me...;)

The same then I changed to Explorer 2 from Zabkat, there is a free lite version and a demo version of the full one too - does all I need in 7 64 bit though GUI not that spiffy, maybe I try Dopus now.

It's Aussie...means they spell things rite, too.

...and when it all goes to poo they say..."eff it...let's all go to the pub".

Who cares if the proggy works....ya gotta love the 'tude...;)
