Star Ratings

Hi all

This is just my opinion I'd like to express and perhaps get your ideas on.

I've been downloading content here since I bought Windows Vista in 2008, downloading many of the 5star submissions then.

The quality was amazing as we had these lovely, rendered Dreams that were awesome. Baron's entries, Comet Deep Impact I&II, Fairytale Dream, Future World etc etc

Now, not saying the new Dreams are not good but do we give a 5star rating too easily to Dreams that would've perhaps only make a 3 star rating back in the day?

Further, why don't we get rendered Dreams any longer?

Just an opinion but would love some feedback.

Thanks all

My own feeling is that one person's taste differs from another's and changes over time. The rating system is at best arbtrary, and matters not a great deal (at least to me). Then again, I'm not a skinner, and I suppose that if I worked hard on a project, the star rating might matter to one degree or another.

As for skins in the past? Yes, I enjoyed TheMasterBaron's work, and Muckeyman's....he still comes around now and again. I think the quality of works varies...and that's just natural. Not everything that appealed to you then will now, and if one only searches by star rating, welll...  he's in for a disappointment since many skins don't receive ratings commensurate with their beauty, etc.

As my dad used to say, "One man's Mede is another man's Persian."

End of quote

don't set such store in stars....use your own judgement...check out comments....some works are overrated....some are underrated....

check 'em out...leave comments with your impressions to help others.... :)

Yeah, you guys are right. I should judge according my own personal standards.

Anybody know why MasterBaron doesn't make skins anymore?

What do you mean by rendered Dreams exactly ? Most of my space dreams amd plasma/ether/smoke/particle type dreams were rendered in After Effects with Trapcode and Knoll plugins, others have been done in Photoshop and then After Effects where elements are rotated. Various others have been based on tutorials from CreativeCow.net and videocopilot.net. I don't think the SDK was ever released so one type of Dream can only be done by Stardock.

Skinners come and go as other things in their lives become more important and with Dreams it is an expensive business if you check out the price of After Effects and PlugIns so since making Dreams brings in no income real work is far more important. Video dreams have increased in % as they are easier to make and the tools needed less costly. I just wish for more sun in Ireland to take more footage. Maybe I could work for SATOUR again if they still exist this time with videocam and not 35mm as in 77/78.

Masterbaron hasn't been around much since his wife passed away. I hope he's doing ok.

As for rendered dreams, that's about all I do these days, although I haven't had the time to do much lately.

Heck, even Doc forgot I create dreams. ;)
