I am so sad......

DesktopX Woes

I realize this is probably totally unrelated, but if so, very coincidental.

I use DesktopX 3.5 Pro on Windows 7. I spent most of the day today working on a DX theme, it was going so smoothly.....I saved it at least twice per hour.

I took a break from it and was trying to read a pdf manual to help a friend install a mobile modem for his netbook.

I installed Foxit reader, and read up on his woes.

When I returned to DesktopX, the theme I was working on had lost all script! It was just stripped out of it!

Everything still says script enabled, you know, the little check marks..lol.

But the clock doesn't work, the media player sliders are black (non working plugin), the text had lost it's formatting and the drag and drop menus all lost their script. No script at all in the entire theme.

Anyone got any idea what happened?

I am very sad......

Ouch.  I feel for ya, RND.

I'm clueless, sadly, but feel for ya.

Have no idea what happend or how to fix it (I know NADA about DX), but to avoid future problems of similar sorts I would suggest you get hold of and USE KeepSafe.
It has save my ass more than a few times, in instances like yours.

Dumb question maybe...but have you rebooted since that happened? I've had something similar happen while working on Winstep themes. After doing them for several hours things just went wonky. I rebooted and everything was back on track.

If you saved several times, and can find them was the script stripped from all the saved copies? Any change occur in your security settings? Very weird. Do a virus scan...I hope I'm wrong, and I hope rebooting solves it. Wouldn't that be a relief? Good luck, bud!

I didn't save in several places, I saved several times, each time, overwriting the one before.

I think several places will be my norm for the future.

Dude...good idea! I'll look into it, but it'll have to wait till payday....all tapped out.  Thanks!

This used to happen to me ALL THE TIME with DX. It wouldn't only lose scripts, but various other things as well.

Every time I would do a save I would give it a new name. Losing days of work is no fun at all.

You should also have an external HD to save things to as well...I have 2. 1 for my Acronis backups and 1 for all "My Documents" stuff cause it really sucks losing stuff...especially after spending hours tweaking something to get it just right.

Well that bites.  Only thing I can think of that might be useful is to try clearing the cache directories, just because that seems to fix so many bizarre things.  Doesn't seem likely that it would do it, but I guess it might be worth a shot.

Thanks for the efforts, guys, but none of those things helped. I will start making several copies in several locations.

Damn Jim, loosing the work sucks...it's happened to me on a few occasions. Even the best backups fail sometime.

KeepSafe is great for versioning to get back old versions of files.  I also put really important things in Dropbox so they're backed up to all my machines.

Good Idea! I have Dropbox. I'll be getting KeepSafe as soon as I can afford it. (A little strapped now.)

Thanks, Shirley!

Jim, I think you have a 64 bit system. KeepSafe is for 32 bit, and I wouldn't pick it up without learning if it was 64 bit compatible.

Doc, I'm glad I didn't let you pick my system....lol

I'm 32 bit all the way, baybee!!      :D

Reminds me of the RightClick thing when instead of fixing long time reported bugs people where suggested the same (buy KeepSafe)... Sometimes I really have to rub my eyes here.

KeepSafe will actually work on 64 bit systems, but only for 32 bit apps.

Perhaps Stardock could put an option for incremental file saves in the program.

I have a couple programs with the option and it works well.

That isn't the problem. I saved it many times during the day. Now, I'm saving to 3 locations and 1 copy is named different...lol.

sViz gave us a widget that will auto save , sort of, at set intervals. I used to use it, think I will again, but it only saves to a default location that you set. It won't save to 3 locations.
