I need help from the community on running a GalCiv II PNP game. Lore experts appreciated!

Hello people! I'm planning on running a DND (D20 Modern) PNP (Pen-and-Paper) RPG with some friends. I will be hosting and DMing it online and probably use a program like Maptool or TTopRPG to play.

What I've got down so far: my players will be a crack team of probably multi-racial mercenaries sent to the surface of a Drengin planet to set explosives at the core of the planet before an invasion. See what I did there? :P I need help with...

A. Racial stats. In case you're not a DND buff, all races receive specific stats on their Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence Wisdom, and Charisma. I'm probably going to add a +2 total statistic to each of the races. For example, Humans recieve +1 Intelligence and +1 Charisma while the Torians receive +2 Wisdom. Some of the races are less obvious, at least to me. Like the Drath. What the hell do I give them? :)

B. Racial personalities/quirks/. Would it be possible for a Drengin and Torian to work on a team? There is precious little information on individuals of the different races. I suppose the concept of the United Planets proves that most races are willing to work with the others, to an extent, but some races are mysterious to me, possibly because I never played through the campaigns. Like the Iconians. What up with those guys?

C. Pictures of GalCiv II characters/ships for use as icons or character portraits. Now I could FRAPS and copy/paste stuff on my own, but any fan artwork or cached screenshots would be super awesome.

D. Fluff. What kind of nasty things do Drengin have on their worlds? What kind of weapons/items would be available to the players? And whatever else you can think of. Thanks! I have a tentative document written for the campaign if anyone is interested.

PS

I posted this in Twilight of the Arnor since it is the most active GalCiv II forum I could find, moderators can feel free to move it if it is off-topic.

My thoughts on the matter as a minor-league backstory expert:

A. First, I just have to say that I frankly despise the use of the D&D rules for science fiction settings or anything besides their fantasy origins. That said, a good starting point would be the little +/- in each race's description (i.e. "Strong Diplomacy/Weak Military"). A few other details of relevance:

Arceans are strong but not terribly bright.

Drengin are very bright and highly rational, but not as creative as humans.

Drath are 20 ft. shapeshifters and may be slightly overpowered (although, I have read that the shapeshifting is Altarian myth and the Drath are actually just highly sneaky).

B. All races could work together depending on circumstances, except, possibly, the Korath, who are insane by the standards of other races. Racial enemies could temporarily work together to fight a greater menace, although it would have to be a major one (Drengin and Terrans did NOT cooperate against the Dread Lords). I'd note that in your description for the plot, a Drengin character would be unlikely at best. Although I view racial alignments as applying to the race's government and not every member of that race (so good Drengin could exist), the Drengin Empire has not had a civil war in its 100,00 year history before the Korath thing,  and my take on the Drengin, at least, has them as a highly loyal race, so I doubt that one would help the invasion of a Drengin planet.

As for the Iconians (possibly my favorite race backstory-wise), TOA unique tech trees help a lot with filling in their backstory. Here's the short version:

The Iconians were the only one of the younger races to develop a civilization during the height of the Precursor Era. They served and idealized the Precursors and patterned themselves after Precursor society. They created the Yor as nonsentient robotic servants. During the war between the Dread Lords and Arnor, the Dread Lords altered the Yor to have free will and a hatred of all organic life. The Yor rose up and nearly slaughtered the Iconians, of whom only a few escaped. The surviving Iconians inherited a lot of the Precursors' advanced biotechnology, but they don't really understand it, and without the Precursors' quasi-supernatural inherent "powers", they can't really control it. The Iconians have spent the millions of years since the war dreaming of their past glories, never really realizing that they weren't theirs to begin with. (As for the campaigns, the Iconians were members of the human Coalition during DL. They were the only member race to come out relatively intact after the surprise Drengin assault at the end, but have withdrawn into their space again).

C. No help here... I advise you to make some ships and take the screenshots yourself. BTW, depending on your group of players, it is worth noting that there aren't many female portraits in game, only human, Altarian, and Thalan (yes, Hithesius is female). This might be a problem, but I would note that, as these are aliens, you might not be able to tell anyway (for all we know, some of them might have more then two genders)...

D. Again, TOA techs would be very useful for this. The Drengin tech tree includes lots of "nasty stuff". Weapons can really be anything - based on the old invasion movie, both energy and projectile weapons are in use.

I'd be curious to see this document to get an idea of what you already know/have decided... this sort of thing isn't really what I think about with the backstory.

BTW, reading some of the more "fanfictiony" AARS might help with inspiration.

First of all according to the book in Dark Avatar the teams were torians, arceans, torians, altarians, and drengin, yor, drath thalans. As far as an rpg, I like stradagies better. He has a point about Dungeans and Dragons, Star Wars and Star Trek both have Rpg's. Star Wars is more like Galactic Civilizations because of the hyperdrive technology though. The AI make thier own ships you could observe and try to make these. The Drengin are like the Klingons in star trek you could get ideas from them. The drath in dread lords is more like the gnomes combined with the halflings in dungeons and dragons, because they lost from someone who could not fight the altarians their preferred class should be a rogue. The only place I know to get alien special powers from is gamma world. Even though they do show a tint of religion in their description, Thier personalities are instigators. You can give them bonuses in the skill points referring to this. Don't forget dungeons and dragons have a complete book of skills. If babylon 5 have a rpg combine with star wars would be a start.

Uh... what? I'm not the greatest expert on GalCiv lore (and I think the original poster has long since vanished) but a lot of this is either rather superficial or just isn't right.

BTW, I don't mean to be overly critical; I just think you should know a little more about the backstory before you post advice on it.

Star Wars is more like Galactic Civilizations because of the hyperdrive technology though.

Hyperdrive in GalCiv works much more like Star Trek warp drives then generic "hyperdrive" that travels through some form of hyperspace. GalCiv hyperdrives work by folding space in a manner that sounds similiar to Star Trek.

The Drengin are like the Klingons in star trek you could get ideas from them.

This is a pet peeve of mine. Brad Wardell has said several times that Drengin are not like Klingons. If any race is, it's the Arceans (who I view sort of as a race of Lt. Worfs).

The drath in dread lords is more like the gnomes combined with the halflings in dungeons and dragons, because they lost from someone who could not fight the altarians their preferred class should be a rogue.

And how does this make them like either gnomes or halflings?

If babylon 5 have a rpg combine with star wars would be a start.

Now this is a pretty good idea (there was a Babylon 5 RPG a few years back; I think it actually used the so-called d20 system) as parts of GalCiv are similiar to Babylon 5. I especially view Torians as similiar to B5 Narns (though this does not make Drengin equivalent to Centauri).
