I'm actually someone who tried .net on the development side and stopped mostly due to the fact that I would never be able to convince people to install "another pack of files" just to run a program that I wrote, which I think as an application development language things like C++ are still far more used and adopted. That said I never really tried the web services so cannot comment on those!

In this day and age of quick comes and goes, I will give it credit for actually still being here three years later when normally we'd be on to some new crazy scheme by now.

If you think it's lame then you probably dont really know what it is.

It was never actually anything new at all...but the integration of all the pieces they already had. Database access, Win32 API, Web, OLE etc...all bundled into one common model.

.NET is mostly a developer tool....but they chose to also market it as a user functionality (ie the New functionality users gain from applications being easily integrated) buzz word as well.

It's one of those things that was hyped real big, but really just becomes a quiet reality.

Now, now ... let's not get pissy. That was only my opinion, not a categorical imperative.
