Here's a YouTube tutorial that tells you the basics of After Effects.  I've never used it After Effects, but I do use Photoshop and most of what I learned, I learned either from online tutorials or a couple of books I bought from Amazon.com.

AE do all 10 basic training tutorials here , after that do any tutorials by Andrew Kramer, research radio waves and wiggle.

Photoshop tutorials just google - plethora out there. Good ones here and here with You suck at Photoshop being funny.

If buying Adobe products they are normally cheaper at Amazon than from Adobe, source both .co.uk and .com Amazon sites and convert prices, adding VAT where necessary.

There is no doubt that Photoshop is rated at #1. However I would bet that there are many skinners on here that use Paint Shop Pro and do a great job with it. If you know your way around PSP than maybe you just need to find a few more tricks with it to do what ever it is you are trying to do. At least you wouldn't have to start from scratch with another program. You may also want to ask on here who uses PSP and than you will really find out if you can do what you want with it. Either way have fun and while I'm here. Happy Holidays to all.

They are a bit daunting at first, once you get used to the interface they get to be easier. You don't have to learn everything at one time...take it slow and try to let the lessons sink in. I've been using them for 5 years and I still learning something new every so often.

AE Basic training from videocopilot are the easiest lessons here. Probably looks different as different workspace setups. Go to workspace top right and see the dropdown options and also click windows from the main menu also to see what parts you have set to show - you can resize these in overall layout and group them to use tabs etc. The adobe  AE homepage describes the setup of the interface really well. CS3 one is here.
