PowerQuest; Partition Magic updated to v7.0

Looks like PowerQuest are not going to give a "free" Windows XP NTFS 5.1 update to those who have Partition Magic 6, instead they will "charge" $50 for the privilege of upgrading to v7.0 so that they can use the program within XP! Considering that the "full" version is going to cost $70, would it not be better to charge like $35 for an upgrade instead of $50 or even give users who have bought the software recently a free upgrade!

PowerQuest--the inventor of on-the-fly hard-disk partitioning software--has revved up its PartitionMagic software to give Windows XP users improved control of their hard drive and other data storage resources on their PCs.

PartitionMagic 7.0 is scheduled to be available next week for a suggested retail price of $69.95. Current users can upgrade previous versions for a $49.95 fee. It is the first application to qualify for Microsoft's Designed for Windows Logo Program.

"PartitionMagic, with its enhanced NTFS support, will help users experience the full benefits of Windows XP," says John Fredericksen, general manager for Windows marketing.

The new PowerQuest software enables users to create multiple partitions of various sizes and configurations on hard drives. Officially, the software handles drives up to 80GB in size, although company representatives say the new version can partition hard drives larger than 140GB without problems.

The updated software also supports USB drives, so you can access and manipulate external drives with the same ease as your hard drive. Users can move subfolders or certain files within folders to a new partition instead of having to shift entire root files or folders over to a new partition.

arrrggghh... screwed again.

I just bought PM6.0 last week when I was rebuilding both my computers... I found it wouldn't run on my NTFS drive and had to go back to fdisk

Write to PQ and tell them what happened. Someone one one of the XP groups said he did, and they gave him a free upgrade.

I agree that their upgrades are a bit too pricey. I think they should give existing users a little more of a break.

I agree, getting pretty sick of having to pay outrageous upgrade costs...

Bad enough paying micro$oft more bucks for next ver of windoze and orfice (whatever stupid number or name we can think of next).

I think it should be at least half the price of the original, or better still more like a quarter - after all we (the customers) have all ready investead in the original product. There is no way I'm paying $50 for an upgrade!

The upgrade is usually just a collection of bug fixes that should not of been there in the begining! and a pretty new interface (i.e. bells & whistles)

How about ez creator 5 and wink2, anyone remember that joke? - think it's called lets release an upgrade (read: beta software) to our customers and charge them!!!

Don't get me wrong, I would be the first to pay for a new version of the product if that's what it really is.

Powerquest must think we (it's customers are really stupid) we know it's really version 6.1 not 7.0

Oh well so much for customer loyality,
another reason to start using linux more...

Norton System Works 2000 and Internet Security 2000 were incompatible with Windows2000. They offered no upgrade even for IS2k... you had to buy a full-retail copy of IS2001... That's when I found ZoneAlarm

The PQ guys are pretty cool. I'm sure they'd give you an upgrade since you have only had it for a week. Stardock has about a 2 months time period for free upgrades. For example, if you purchased WB 2.0 after July 1st, 3.0 will be a free upgrade. Of course, the upgrade from 2.0 to 3.0 is only $10, which is 50% of the original price.
