BSOD problem

Hi, I keep geting the Blue screen of Death saying that "nv4_disp.dll" (the display driver I believe) has caused the problem. I recently downloaded and installed the newest Nvidia driver (190. something) and now i have this problem.

I Thought it was just a driver problem at first so I re-installed the previous driver, but that didn't do anything. The driver was stable before so now I am out of ideas.

It usually happens after 45 min or so of gaming, it hasn't crashed while at the desktop yet.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Have you tried just rolling back to your previous driver? Was it working fine then?

Xp w/ SP3

9800gtx+

It happens with all the games, sometimes its stable for an hour or more, and sometimes it crashes in 5 min in the same game.

I do have my CPU overclocked, (q6700) and lowering the clock seems to extend the time before crashes, but it was stable before at higher overclocks and it still crashes after awhile, even around stock speeds.

Temps don't seem to be a problem, the card usually idles around 45 degrees and under load it gets to about 55, but thats never been a problem before either.

One of the latest nVidia driver vers has issues with GPU fan recognition/control...[I found this when speedfan no longer displayed a GPU temp or fan].

My guess is your GPU fan is throttled back and overheating...but wait to see if yrag sees this...he's the tech wiz for all things computer...

Kill the overclock.

Control Panel/ Folder Options/ View:  "uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.

Start/ All Programs/ Run: type: sfc /scannow

Best drivers for 9: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_185.85_whql.html

and/or

Manually set fan speed: http://www.evga.com/precision/

the 185.85 drivers are the best for 9? What does that mean exactly? 9 Series?

Im going to be getting some newer games like Dragon Age soon and I'm wondering if I should update to the current drivers or just stay with what I have, which is the 185.85.

Did you install the older drivers over the top of the newer, or did you do an uninstall of the newer drivers first? (with a reboot in-between?)

Makes a difference, you know.

 

Yrag is correct on many points. Kill the OC (unless you go radical OC with special cooling, the benefits are marginal at best) , and manually set your video fan speed with Evga Precision. I would suggest 50% to begin with.

And be sure you don't have a lot of accumulated dust in the video card's fan/heatsink.

This is the best tech forum in the world, thanks guys.

I'll do that and hopefully it will solve it, but yrag, how do you know 185.85 is the best driver for the 9 series? The differences between drivers is usually pretty small,

Except in this case its destabilized my rig entirely...

Do as I outlined in #5, except for changing driver. If no joy install 185.85.

Set speed to 70% and fought with the driver over the fan and it seems good.
