Varsity Letters.

Why don't we get one too?

Every school has sports. Obviously, some of the sports differ greatly in intensity and talent…. But all-in-all, all participants should be rewarded with a Varsity letter to represent their hard work….

There is the life long argument that will continue on for the rest of time… the “sport” of cheerleading. Now, I know that it is a sport. It is an extremely vigorous sport. It requires flexibility, strength, good sound projection, and balance. And they go to a camp and have practices just like the band.

So… they have a letter when we don’t.

The band has to use EXTREME teamwork. It is the only sport that I can think of that when one person makes a mistake…. We all look bad, and that mistake cannot be fixed later on like soccer, football or baseball. And it is not a winning or losing sport… it is all opinion on how we play. One person can say we did horrible, while another can think we did great.

It takes practice… lots of practice. And it is the only sport (I can think of right now) whose "playing" season lasts all year round at our school. Yes, we get a “band letter” which is not the same as a Varsity letter for the simple fact that they don’t even consider it a varsity sport.

If cheerleaders can scream and yell at football games 4 months out of the year and get a Varsity Letter… then I don’t see any problem with giving the band a Varsity Letter…
Who goes and plays actual music at every football game, home basketball games, and goes to contest and doesn't recieve any credit?

Other schools offer their band a Varsity Letter… so why doesn’t our school?

~Sam

(I am not putting down cheerleading in any way. We have two excellent cheerleaders who are in the band also. And I do recognize that it is an extremely vigorous sport that I know I could NEVER do.)

Maybe... just maybe... neither cheerleading NOR band should get letters.... maybe... just maybe... it should go to the sportsmen only.

Yeah, pointless unrealistic comment. Your world will be ruled by varsity footballers and cheerleaders so this is just a way of getting you used to it.

You might as well say why not give the groundskeeper a letter or the english teacher who told you to Carpe Diem... or... or...

Actually, I'm not sure where you got the idea that we don't letter... We get varsity letters just like everyone else there sam. That is unless if someone changed the way it worked since last year.

The only thing different about the band letter is a little musical thingy-jobber in the middle, it's still a letter. Like Frightlever kind of said/inferred/came across to me as saying, the band and cheerleading don't even have to get letters. I think it's more a sign of gratitude personally, because football players, basketball players, baseball players, wrestlers, volleyball players, etc. put in a lot more sweat and work into what they do than band members.

Granted, I sweated a LOT during band camp (in the middle of the summer), but the conditioning, running, agility, quickness, degree of awareness, etc. are much more prevalent in sports.

I'm with Brandon. I thought that the band did get varsity letters. At least that's what I was told. Have you asked Ms. Meyer about this? If you haven't then maybe you should.

We do, isn't that what we get our first year at the band banquet. Cheerleading is a hardcore sport. believe me, i was dared to try out my freshman year it takes crazy atheletic ability they definately deserve a letter.
