Jewish State? Islamic State? The US - the Christian State?

Toying With Theocracies

Scattersez:

JEWISH STATE ? ISLAMIC STATE ? NOW THE US – THE
CHRISTIAN STATE ?
( TOYING WITH THEOCRACIES )

Touchy topic this.. We usually thought of beliefs as something personal, in fact we kept this topic out of polite conversation and in some ways I’m glad there’s this blogsite thought-police notation below reminding us that “discussions aren’t allowed “ most likely for this and other blogs dealing with “sensitive” topics, otherwise some sites would be flooded with more comments than could be handled.

But, com’on, isn’t this the logical conclusion, if one really is sincere with one’s belief – that of dedicating your country to your God ? Okay, don’t answer that..yet. Quiet. Quiet please.

Surfing around, and searching on theocracies, we found a guy named Flavius who coined the word in the 1st Century. Actually, he went a step further, saying a Theocracy would be the ideal government for Jews, long before a Jewish state came into being. Just so, we don’t get confused with what we’re talking about here, a Theocracy is “a form of government in which the governmental rulers are identical with the leaders of the dominant religion.” Sounds familiar ? Don’t we have this already in place in our (hmmrph.) democracy ? (hrmmph..excuse this bit of sore throat). Two big examples of theocracies are given, though – the Papal State of Vatican and of, course, Iran. I thought it funny at first that Israel wasn’t given as an example but looking at their leaders, Ariel Sharon isn’t exactly the Head Rabbi. So, I guess the Jewish state is more of a theocracy from a historical standpoint rather an actual functioning Theocracy. The British Monarchy, whose Title , stemming from Henry VIII’s libido, as Head of the Church of England, although seemingly a Theocracy, is actually not one since the monarch’s role is merely ceremonial and separate from Tony Blair’s .

But going back to this land ( yes, from California to the New York Island), isn’t a -Theocracy for us a neat attractive idea ? You know, with religion around – enforced – the kids will be more disciplined, less divorces, less broken families and consequently less crimes, more peace, more productivity – a rising economy and presto! – a better standard of living. We’ll have less discussions and confusions on abortions, stem cell research and even evolution and have more time for our Maker.

A Baptist Press reports on the views of Alan Keyes, a one-time Reagan Administration official and former presidential candidate:

“Americans should demand that they be granted what the tyranny of the courts has sought to wrest from us -- the freedom to live in communities that are governed by laws that reflect our beliefs”

“ Keyes wants an America where Christian churches dominate politics on all by the federal level - all laws and all social norms will be determined by whatever religious persuasion is in the majority. If you don't like it, you can move. If you can't find an American community that isn't dominated by religion, I guess you can just leave the country.”

This is very déjà vu, having heard this threat from different blogs around JU. Keyes has even a geographical concept of how Theocracy is to unfold in the US:

“Keyes acknowledged, Catholicism likely would dominate in the Northeast and Protestantism down South. With a growing Muslim population, a state could even have state-sanctioned Islamic symbols and schools. "I don't think it would be likely, but it would be possible," Keyes told Baptist Press. "It was intended that folks who were of a similar persuasion in terms of religion would be able to establish communities. That's what the first colonialists to America did."

Yeah, right. This goes right along the War Against Terror. Islamic State Vs. Christian State. Yay!

Just One Thing.

How did the Founding Fathers who drafted the US Constitution, as witnesses to these religion-based communities of the “first colonialists” find the collective wisdom to insert the phrase separating the Church from State then ? (Hhmmm).

Regardless of how the Religious Right (Evangelicals) and the rightist politicians interpret the outcome of the last elections (confusion on who used who ), a politicized Religion and/or religious politics has come to fore in the national consciousness. For better or worse, the undying Truth cannot be denied – Theocracy is not Democracy. Period.

you raised a good point here

this is the other side of what it is called clash of civilizations ,Islamic civilization vs. western (chirstians and jews) ,catogerizing the world based upon the religion

As a Muslim who looks back to the hisotry of Islam and its civilization I found out that Islam has already separated between the Religion and Politics that is the real Islam that calls for freedom in expression ,equity and most important democracy, tell where is this now?

Poeple in Politics like to use the religion to attract people because three reasons ,

1)Religion for normal people is a percious thing (as for poeple in the east whether Muslims or chistians),they can win those poeple by pretending being religious (for example in Syria in mid 60s when Hafez El-Assad became the president ,he was tought how to pray to win the respect of the syrians who are very religious muslims and also chirstians ,he didn't believe in anything except himself.

2) Some regimes use religion to have a power over people that if they disobey them ,people will disobey God because the actions of the rulers comes from Heaven ,what is known Divine Rule (this way of thinking exists in Iran ,the great leader of revolution or whatever they call him ,had some hidden power with God !!!,by the way this isnot happened in Modern islamic Iran ,In fact what is interesting in Old Persia ,the King also is looked as the Fire's son (the fire worshipping was the religion then )

3) Religion can be used as political tool for brainwashing especailly for people who are ignorant or even know little about their religion like the radical islamic group in Egypt when they were arrested ,and discussed their beliefs it was a surprise that they know little about their religion

At the end I guess Playing with Religion is dangerous thing

Another thing I remember the Slogan of the great Revolution of 1919 in Egypt that led to our independence " Religion For God ,Home for all"

" Religion For God ,Home for all"

- correct me as to my interpretation, would this be similar to "Give to Ceasar what belongs to Ceasar; To God what belongs to God"?

Did the restrictions in the first amendment always apply to both state and federal governments or just federal government?

No I guess it is different,in fact if I am not wrong the one who said "Give to Ceasar what belongs to Ceasar; To God what belongs to God" was the pope of the Alexanderia (also in Egypt) I wish just to remember in what occasion

it means that Politics has no to interfer with religion

But the meaning of the Religion to God and Home for all ,is that Egypt for every Egyptian is its home regardless its religion,as religion for God
This slogan was made as an Egyptian answer on the attempts of Britian to divide Egyptians as Muslims and Chirstians in the last century

It is a general rule for any democratic country that is based upon freedom and doesn't catogerizing its citizens according religion or color or what eve

"Did the restrictions in the first amendment always apply to both state and federal governments or just federal government?"
sorry for the delayed answer, messybuu (jet lag, time zones), but my answer to that is yes, the restrictions do apply to both state and federal governments when the First Amendment is viewed in its relation to the Fourteenth Amendment which carries out the restrictions to the state level. Since this question has to do with some legalese or legal interpretations as to the intent of a law or legal interpretation, I'm open to hearing a contrary view from a legal expert, if there are any.

So, all in all I just have to sum this blog up as distinguishing between having a personal belief system - being faithful to its teachings for the personal guide or conduct of our lives - and that of institutionalized religions ( to include anti-theism and agnosticism) wishing to redirect societal laws for their own agenda. They're not the same thing. The consequence of doing the latter -as shown by the practicing theocracies of today - is ultimately to restrict that society's growth and consequently restrict the individual's growth. When men congregate and worship in their own fashion, they individually , take the responsibility of ther actions before their fellow-worsjippers and their God, but when they ask the State to act in their behalf and impose their system of beliefs to all inhabitants of the state, they are asking the State to share this burden of responsibility, and should it lead to a wasteful foreign or domestic policy later , they need only to point to the State as the culprit - the only place for redress. With so many different religions, each claiming to be the correct way to God - however will that society ever move forward?
