AI tech advancment

When ever I play on normal difficulty or above no matter how higher my research bonus is and no matter how high my research spending is nearly every race has higher level techs than I do. I dont just mean by a bit either, I mean I've barely finished researching Laser III and half the AI have Plasma II when my research bonus is 120% and theirs 60%.

Literally every game I play above sub-normal this happens. Why? I know at a certain point the AI gets bonuses but I didnt think it would be this low a point.

I have had similar experiences.  One explanation might be that the AIs are doing a lot of tech trading amongst themselves.  I do not think they do that, but it would explain matters.  That is, one trades beam weapon advances for, say, moral techs while still another trades government advances.  One solution is to emulate that sort of behavior, as I'll discuss further below.

The standard posting on this Board is that the AI gets no extra bonuses until the level above "Tough".

One thing you might do is to see if you have techs that the screen shows the AIs do not.  If there are items you can trade that you have researched, then part of the answer might be that you chose different things to research.  Another thing is to watch the AI treasuries.  You can see them by going through the motions of a trade without ever "sending".  If their treasuries suddenly drop quickly, they may be rush buying more than you are (like research buildings).

Another possibility is that the AIs simply have a more efficient research sequence than you are doing.  That is, the AIs may concentrate on researching higher research facilities earlier or, perhaps, they do NOT research those higher facilities while you are the one doing that.

In my games before I moved up in difficulty and had to change tactics, I often fell behind in research early, only to run past the AIs when I got my planet count up and had a higher base.  In my more recent games, I tend to get ahead early when I run around the basic techs, then fall increasingly behind as the AI bonuses kick in and I shift to production improvements and colony rush.  (At higher difficulty levels with lots of AIs, if you are at all slow to colonize, you end up with very few planets - I try to grab at least 15 - 20 on the largest maps)  Eventually, I tap the minor AIs and trade with Diplo bonuses to get what I need, and go on from there.

One help is that, instead of researching all the techs up a line, trade to jump in several techs from the beginning of that line.  Thus, maybe you should never use research resources to research Beam Theory, laser 1, laser 2, and laser 3.  Instead, research something else you need, then trade it to a Minor for Laser 3, and research from there.

Just this week i have been playing a game with Drengin set to Godlike, other races set to Genious. Now the research rate is set to very slow but despite this, the AI is racing through the tech tree like crazy!

I am playing Terran with diplomatic bonuses, so i can easily trade techs with the AI. Now what i am noticing about my game is that no sooner have i built just 1 or two ships of a powerful new design, i find myself in the shipyard creating yet another design significantly more powerful yet again! half the time i am not even completing any ships of a new design before it is upgraded yet again! I will start building a ship in a planet, and by the time that ship has been finished, it has changed its design 3 times!! This is just plain insanity, honestly, we need a science rate probably 20 times slower than 'very slow' before this tech craziness at higher difficulty can be reduced to a more reasonable level.

Or you can Turn off Either Tech trading or if thats too extreme you could turn off Tech Brokering. Tech brokering turned off makes it so that you can only trade away techs you researched yourself. So for instance if you trade for Stingers 4, you cant trade it for something else. This slows things down a great deal, while still allowing for trades. Obviously this affects the AI as well.

The computer players DO trade techs with each other and they trade virtually ALL of them. They will practically give away techs to each other that they would NEVER trade to you. Turning off Tech Brokering does mitigate this significantly and I always do so. I usually play at Painful and I am usually ahead of all the AI's in tech level. (and when I'm not ahead, I will be eventually)

Though if you trade techs wisely, you can stay ahead at Painful compared to the AIs: I've been able to do so for most of my recent games, and I don't consider myself to be a strong player.
